I just picked up a (new to me) set of sails, boom amd complete rudder setup + one extra rudder for $200.00
Even though they are 30 years old, the sails were stored inside and are crisp and almost like new. A good cleaning, just dirt, and a couple of stitches at the end of the batton pockets is all they need! My old sails are about gone. I might make a canopy for my deck on my house with them.
Will laundry detergent in the bathtub work ok?
Now off to the lake today, I hope there are less powerboats than yeaterday! Arrgggggggggg......

Thanks, John G.

That is a good deal if the sails really are in that good of shape.

Laundry detergent is pretty harsh stuff. I know that there is something out there that would be more gentle. I saw it posted somewhere a while ago but can't remember what it was called. The post was something to do with have sails refurbished.

The sails are red, white and blue and were made by McKibbin sails so they are pre 1975, according to Hobie Hotline volume 36, #5. I washed them off this morning, and they cleaned up nicely, used a touch of dishsoap and rinsed them off really well. The pencil writing on the McKibbon sail patch and ends of the batton pockets look like they were written yesterday. All of the numbers and flying H are in perfect condition and not coming off, the sail number is 12746.
Can't wait to try them out!

John:

If you sail in salt water wash them every three months are so to stop salt build up. I use to string mine between trees, but do it how ever you need too.

I sail in fresh water, but since they had been in storage so long I washed them, quite a bit of dirt came off. I strung them up between the deck and the swingset to rinse off and dry.

Love the sails, Sail number something like 13242 but not exactly sure. Mine came with a 1973 h16

Sam, Yes those are the same ones I have but I will be using my yellow furling jib.
It seems as if the jib on the red white and blue sails is heavier fabric than the main sail has, is this normal?

Both my Jib and my main are (seem to be) the same weight, maybe the jib is just in better shape then the main?
