Here in Milwaukee, WI we have Lake Michigan to sail on but it is extremely cold for all but 1-2 weeks per year. Anyone have advice on wetsuits? Which brand? Full or 1/2 suit? Sources for purchase? Features to have or avoid? Thanks!

DRY SUIT!!!

They don't limit your range of movements as much as a wet suit and you can wear different combinations of clothes underneath to stay warm depending on the temperature.

They keep the wind off as well. If you get a wet suit, you'll need a windproof layer over the top.

Three quick dry suit tips:

1 Always rinse the zip and the seals after use.
2 Always put talcum powder on the seals for storage or useage
3 Wear sailing trousers over the top of the dry suit to prevent it getting snagged on deck fittings and ripping.

If you have Helly Hansen over there, my old HH was the best suit I've ever had. I've had Henri Lloyd (over priced crap), Musto one peice (crap), 2 HH (excellent suits) and my current one is a Typhoon (jury's still out on this one).

am not cat sailor but windsurfer / kitesurfer. Here in Memphis, TN, our season starts in the fall and ends in the spring ... water temp is probably close to your late spring / early fall water temps. I sail air temps to about 45 if water is not colder than the air and I am in the water more that boat sailors. I agree with the drysuit for flex and comfort ... both temp and fatigue. I have used 3 diff brands and highly recommend the Neil Pryde for windsurfing ... smooth skin but will advise to go bigger than the sizing recommends ... allows you to insulate under with silks or thermo. I have not tried the "pullover 2 pieces" drysuits tho. My 2 cents ...

Pray for wind,
Mac in Memphis
