Hey I have a pretty dumb question. I would like to paint the hulls of my Hobie 16 however I don't know if I should use some sort of special boat paint or can I just use paint from the local hardware store? If I can use regular paint, what kind of paint is best? Gloss, Flat, Spray paint? thanks for your help |

I would personally take it to an auto or boat paint/detailer. They have an amaxing selection of colors, and do a professional job. A good paintjob can last years depending if you wet-dry sandpaper it for speed. |

Last winter I used Interlux Brightside Polyurethane (4359 White) to repaint my H16 hulls. Goes on with a roller & brush and was even easy enough for this amateur to get good results. Went from yellow (original color) to bright shiny white. 1 gallon did the job. Mathew |

Matt keeps his boat near mine, and the paint seems to be holding up well. He urged me to use it for my hobie 14 project, but I think I'll end up spraying it. I know about 4 people who have use this paint and its various colors with real success. Go to www.yachtpaint.com to find a good deal and quick shipping on the Interlux Brightside. |

I think it's holding up pretty well. Like any paint, it can be scraped off if someone bumps me, or a I drop a wrench on the hull, but it's easily touched up. Mathew |

How about the mast and crossmembers. I would like to paint the mast black, the front and rear crossmembers black and the side members yellow. Also yellow will be the boom. Am I going to run into flex problems with the mast? Joe |

I put carpeting on the sides of the tramp frame, didn't do anything to the crossbars or mast. Carpet is a lot more comfortable than paint on the frame. To the extent that the hulls flex, I haven't noticed any problems, but the mast is more extreme. I don't know how the Interlux would fare in that environment. Mathew |

I have seen a friend of mine get all his aluminium part anodized black. Looks like new. I went to Walmart, got some flat black rustoleum, and very lightly sprayed the mast and front and rear cross bars. It filled in the scratches and looked good, not great. Better than it was before by a long shot. I wouldn't think you'd want to paint the side rails though, they are slippery enough already. Get some nice indoor outdoor, cut it to fit and use contact cement on it. I just put new on my 14 and it looks great. cw |

Go to Home Depot and buy an 8' piece of the vinyl-backed carpet runner. It comes in a 24" width and looks like floor mats. It's enough to do two sets of sidebars. Been on the boat for three regattas now and shows no signs of wear (it is wearing out my trapeze shock cords, though  )
