We announced this morning at the ICAST fishing show in Florida...

Hobie’s bioengineered MirageDrive propulsion system for kayaks was revolutionary in its inception in 1997 and has been evolving ever since. Now comes the biggest evolution - so far. Introducing the patent-pending Hobie MirageDrive 180 forward-reverse propulsion system that will be integrated into all 2017 model year Mirage kayaks.

Okay, here's a question. How the heck did penguinman manage to use this new drive in the EC Challenge, but none of our keen observers spotted it?

Well done Jim, are you ex-CIA of something?

Matt,

Any idea on the retrofit cost of the new drive?

There is no retrofit... This is a new drive. Only using a few parts from the older ones.

Unless that wasn't obvious... the new 180 drive fits older boats. No modifications or retrofit changes required. Just obtain the new 180 drive and drop it in.

I have been thinking for some time about how a reverse mechanism with the mirage drive might be designed in the future. I figured it was only a matter of time. Particularly with competitors bragging that their prop-driven systems had this one huge edge (only edge?) over the mirage drive. Well, apparently, not any more. Congratulations Hobie!

I always conjured up an image of a cartridge that enabled the mirage drive to be rotated with the feet 180 degrees (kind of like a railway turntable) and locked into place. The new designed looks even simpler. Hope it's bullet-proof from the get-go.

Mike

I'm with you SL.
Just bought my totalscan and berkleypro. And still contemplating about buying TOrqeedo ultralight and now I foresee another upcoming expense. I prioritized the totalscan over the Torqeedo as I have my minnkota and heavy lead battery that is still serving me well. And I'm fishing and not boating so I always put value on those gears/accessories that can help me catch.
Well the good news about this reverse mirage is we were given by Hobie almost a year to save :) 2 dollars saving everyday will help.

New Camo color for PA12, PA14 and Outback. Camo will replace Olive as a color option for these three models.

I've noticed that the shape of the fin is changed: Any idea about the performaces compared with the current Mirage Drive with Turbo Fin?
