Mate,
You're not far off. Blue and red =28.39kms (-about 4kms for my return trip up creek)
My total trip distance for the 3 days was 36.57kms.
Re the 2 way radio. Is that the best you've got?
They say there's no such thing as a dumb question on these forums.
As you know I'm not so sure, but yours doesn't qualify anyway because you forgot to add the question mark!

On this trip both Tony and Russ had skipper seats added to their Islands.
Up to now I've never felt it necessary to add one to mine as I'm mostly sitting on the haka.
However due to flukey winds and currents, this trip I spent a lot more time sitting in the wet seat well and pedaling. Moving from the dry haka back down into a puddle of water really brought home the skipper seat advantages and I've now got skipper seat envy.
Russ's clever design is very versatile as it can be easily removed and used in camp. 8)
Here he is enjoying sitting in comfort:

I know what my project is going to be!

How does it feel pedalling from the skipper seats? I pedal from my Quarterdeck, but pedalling from the different (higher) angle is definitely not as efficient as pedalling from down in the standard seat.

Chris, on the Thursday, with sod all wind, I pedalled for about four hours with no issues other than the humidity. As long as you have the right distance to the pedals, and a good backrest, pedaling from up higher should be actually more comfortable than standard as you are not pedaling "uphill".

I thought the same Chris but honestly I reckon it does feel more efficient and a hell of a lot more comfortable. I was expecting to stuff the first frame bending attempt but I fluked the right position first go with the pipe bender. If you need any quick dimensions or closer photos Stringy just let me know. I have the top surface of the front of the seat 150mm from the top surface of the front hatch ( if that helps at all ).

Thanks Russ.

As an alternative to a skipper seat, I've been toying with trying Tom Kirkman's method of filling the bottom of the seatwell with urethane. I don't want a seat back sticking up above the quarterdeck, because I like being able to slide easily from side to side when tacking or gybing.

Tony's skipper seat is different to mine. His hinges so that the backrest folds forward onto the seat which may suit the quarterdeck design better ? Mine is fixed in the 'L' shape so is more bulky for transport.

Tony also has a clever method of attaching to the wooden frame. He has it pivoted in the centre so that he can turn sideways to the hull for easy entry and exit.

Hmm, good thought. I might have a closer look at Tony's design. Thanks Russ.

Finally got enough footage edited for a video of our trip. Hope it shows the reason why I bought the AI.

For me, this is what it's all about.

Slaughter does it again! I reckon you captured the spirit of the outing perfectly. Your crab wrangling was a talent we haven't seen before... Did you spend time on an outback station in your youth?

You need a new camera however, as the shots of me make me look overweight

Must be all that French cooking.

Enjoyed seeing our Aussie sailing legends together, enjoying their summer.

Thanks, and well done, "crab whisperer"!

Sorry for the mini hijack...
Chris, here is my platform. Being a BFB, I worried about creating pressure points on the hull with my fat arse, so as well as using the side rails to support the 12mm ply platform, I made a triangulated strut which transfers some of the load to the middle of the Hobie hull.

I believe I saw a post here by NOHUHU "Does it swivel?", so I added one!

NOHUHU - You'll get your own back in a few months time when our weather turns to _ _ _ _ and yours turns to paradise. Tony and Stringy are the only Australians who sail all year round. Crab whisperer  I lke the sound of that ! It was so funny though. Look how far away from them I was, and a sudden turn to the right and they immediately turn left. The thought did cross my mind on what they tasted like. Just take the lid off a buried pot and heard them in. I also wondered what turtle tastes like but that poor bugger was past his used by date.

Tony - Really enjoyed your company mate. I hope I got your best side. Yeah, sorry about the distortion to the video. Camera lens problem
