As you might know I have several posts recently regarding my new baby 1990 H18 SX w/ wings. Up to now, everytime I see her and I find new question.

The latest issue is :

There is a piece of erosion on the mast near the rotation arm, the size is around a 1 inch circle.

I guess it was due to the salt erosion from sea water, I can find some foam inside the mast. Besides, the other metal plates connect to the mast is also "expanded" by these white "salt" powder....

what should I do?

your advice is appreciated. :D

Does your mast have a compression plate on it, this is a metal plate that rivets on the mat where the rotation are attaches. We added one to an older Hobie the other day with a similar problem as you. The hold was a bit smaller than a quarter and this seemed to fix the problem just fine. The part number is 60680001 and can be ordered from your favorite Hobie dealer. Good luck hope this helped, I have also have people get a piece of aluminum welded on the spot too.

Thanks,

I guess it already has a compression plate. let me past a photo link here.

COuld i just use some A & B epoxy to glue it and then cover it by a metal plate ?

I'm not sure you could really fix that with epoxy. It looks like there was some damage to the mast which exposed non-annodized aluminum and the salt corroded it. A major reduction in wall thickness on the mast can cause it to buckle under load. The mast is one part of the boat you don't want to take shortcuts with. You probably don't want to hear this, but I would get a new mast if hte corrosion is as bad as you say.

oh !!!!!!!! my god !!!!!!!!!!!!! :? :? :?

but.. anyway, thanks Nick..

I will try to use epoxy first, and if there is future sign of more erosion, i need to think other way....

It's not the corrosion you need to worry about. It's teh thinning of the wall on the mast. When the mast is under a compressive laod, dents and thin wall sections can be the point where the mast will buckle. You may be fine, but you should keep this in mind.
