I just read an account of a single handed offshore race on Sailinganarchy.com. Great story, but the part I enjoyed the most was the author's account of having a gin and tonic with lime to ward off scurvy, or a dry martini with two olives to ward off scurvy. Now I know why there are so many racers drinking gin and tonic, margaritas, tequila sunrise... ...they are just trying their best to "ward off Scurvy". :)

Its not the alchahol that wards off scurvy its vitiman C rich fruits and veggies.
Wikipedia wrote:
Scurvy can be prevented by a diet that includes certain citrus fruits such as oranges or lemons. Other sources rich in vitamin C are fruits such as blackcurrants, guava, kiwifruit, papaya, tomatoes, bell peppers, and strawberries. It can also be found in some vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, potatoes, cabbage, spinach and paprika. Some fruits and vegetables not high in vitamin C may be pickled in lemon juice, which is high in vitamin C. Many animal products, including liver and oysters, contain vitamin C. Though redundant in the presence of a balanced diet,[30] various nutritional supplements are available that provide ascorbic acid well in excess of that required to prevent scurvy, and even some candies and most soft drinks contain vitamin C as a preservative.

So make sure you have a lime in your gin n' tonic

I knew all the vitamin C stuff, I just didn't know that J cared so much about the health of his fellow sailors. His "parties" at Lake Havasu were just his way of looking out for the rest of us.

If you haven't read the article, it's really funny.

I'm pretty sure the solo circumnavigation stuff is pretty lonely, and in the days prior to monster trimarans making 20+kts, a bit boring. I can't think of his name, he was one of the first to do it non-stop, a Brit, and I believe he was Knighted for it. Anyway, I seem to remember he carried more than a ton of booze with.

I'm sure your schedule is pretty open when you're covering <200 miles a day. Image
