Hobie 16 North Americans, Ventura CA

Hobie 16 Youth and Women’s North Americans after 5
races:

The second day of the Hobie 16 Youth and Womens North
Americans had some welcomed breeze. After a light wind
first day, with only one race completed, the fleets
had a building breeze that peaked at close to twenty
knots late in the afternoon.

With one day remaining Jason and Charles Hess from
Guatemala are dominating the Youth fleet with five
bullets in the first five races of the series. These
young guys are the top team from a competitive fleet
and are likely to be right up there in the Open
Championship next week. Last years Youth Champions,
Mike Siau and Trey James (NY), are in second place
going into the last day.

After a slow start Annie Nelson (CA) and Kathy
Kulkoski (NJ) have taken the lead in the Women’s
fleet. It appears that the increased wind was a bit
more to their liking. The pair won race four and five
today.

The weather has been near perfect. Cool and grey for the rigging and clear on the first day of the event. The wind kicked in strong yesterday and the surf has reduced. Perfect!

I know my kids are having a blast, and they said the Hess guys are incredible.
We're in 8th place right now, after 6 races, hoping to move up a couple of places before the end of the day.
Super regatta and website. :D

Looking at some pics from the N.A..It seems Like Enrique Figuora has his traveller centered(going upwind)even in the heavy air that was on the last day.This seems contrary to a lot of the tunning guides.Did anyone else who was competing notice this.

Traveler position is determined by weight on the wire and ability to hold the boat down. Once the boat is often flying and hard to keep down without sheeting out... you start using traveler. It was not that windy up there and he is a big guy on the wire.

mmiller, mmadge probably refers to the texts that state that upwind on the 16 one should not center the traveler entirely but leave it a few inches out of center, sheeting in hard, even if no depowering is necessary. I have read that too and it has surprised me equally. An urban legend to confuse beginners? :))

I think that on a uni rig (H14 / H17) that travelers are often left out a minimum of a few inches, but never heard that about a boat with a jib. Traveler out on those boats helps to prevent crabbing sideways upwind.

There are two ways to de-power a 16 - with the traveller or with the jib halyard.

You use the traveller in variable wind conditions (gusty). Travel off in the gusts, center in the lulls. The crew works the traveller.

Halyard tension is a more "permanent" adjustment - it's harder to change on the water. The more you slack off the halyard, the looser the leech is on the main when you go two-blocked on the mainsheet. You can go with the traveller centered, sheet two-blocked and still have the top of the sail spilling wind.

In lighter air, I travel off about 4" to keep the top of the sail from stalling.
