I have been following these forums since I decided to buy a pro angler. I just took delivery of it a week ago. It is an awesome fishing machine. I have read all the stuff on big steering drum, little steering drum.... Mine has the upgrade and it should be good. But it isn't. I have taken the access plate off and noticed that there is considerable amount of "rotational movement" from the rudder to the steering shaft. It appears that the cotter pin is sloppy in the groove in the rudder. The rudder is tight enough on the shaft and the cotter pin is tight enough in the shaft I think but the slot in the rudder is much bigger. Does any of this make sense? The cable tension is adjusted nicely on the steering knob so the rudder only rotates a bit too much on the shaft.

Any ideas before I try on my own?

By the way, I love these forums!

Chris

The pin that hold the drum on the rudder shaft is a pretty tight fit (top of the drum). I can't see that as being the issue. If the rudder is up and held by the hull from rotating... can you get the drum to move separately from the rudder?

Hey Matt, what I think I have is the pin is tight enough in the hole of the steel steering shaft but loose in the slot of the rudder. Is there any way to tighten this up? Possibly a wedge in there or larger pin. This is with the rudder in the down position. I am sure that is why the Pro Angler "wanders" a bit when it should track straighter.

The slot in the drum should be a net fit, so maybe you have one with the shaft too high and the drum is dropping lower causing slack in the fit? Maybe a washer under the drum to hold it up against the pin?

I think I fixed it Matt. When my dealer changed the drum they put a 3/32" cotter pin in it... the hole is 1/8". Is the cotter pin supposed to be 1/8" or 3/32"? I put a 1/8" steel pin in it for now until I get a proper sized cotter pin. The hole is a bit high also and I may put a plastic washer under it.

Ahhh... The pin is a net fit in the post and a 1/8" "roll" pin... not cotter. That explains a lot! Should have used the same pin when replacing the drum.

81245001 ROLL PIN 1/8 x 1-1/4 (420 SS)

I will inform my dealer of this. I have roll pins... that will be what it needs...

Thank you Matt.
