Hi all

The bottom rudder gudgeon on my hobie 16 broke, followed by the top gudgeon breaking, pulling out of of the gudgeon screws from the hull. I was on a down wind run with a long distance to travel before could beach the boat. I sailed in on one rudder, with the departed rudder and cross bar trailing behind the boat.

A few questions:

Is there a back plate which the gudgeon screws go into?

I would like to avoid cutting a hole in the hull to put a back plate or other material in place for the gudgeon screw. I was thinking of drilling the current screw hole to a larger diameter, putting a stainless steel stud with a 90 degree bend into the hull and using epoxy to hold in place. The stud would be machine threaded. I would use a nut fastened to the stud to hold the gudgeon in place.

I know that I am not the first hobie owner to face this issue. Ideas?

thanks. Shane

There is an aluminum plate that's glassed into the transom. The gudgeon bolts are threaded into it.

If you drill a slightly bigger hole, you should be able to re-tap the threads and either use a heli-coil to make it the same size hole (not really sure if a helicoil will take the stress though) or use a larger bolt.
Good luck.

Drill & tap the hole up one size to 1/4-20 if there is enough material remaining. (The current screws are #12-24).

Or, purchase the new one-piece gudgeons. Then you can proabably skip the damaged hole and relocate a new hole nearby.

Ok, I have ordered the one piece gudgeons. My boat is a 1976 model. The hole pattern doesn't line up with the one piece gudgeons? Do i need to drill all new holes and plug the old ones?

You will elongate the holes in the casting to fit.
