Looks like Saturday will be the pick of the days. I'll be launching from Rose Bay in the morning if there's anyone else wanting to go out.

Been awhile for one reason or another since I was out last. With a break in the rain and cooler weather we've been having I managed to get out on the harbour on Saturday. First stop was fresh sausage roll straight from the oven at WSC then the usual show and tell sessions as I rigged the AI.

Got in the water and found my side scan sonar seemed to be missing the right hand scan. Bit of an issue as I wanted to go looking for a shipwreck off Bradley's Head. Played around trying to work out what was wrong as I slowly made my way out of Rose Bay. Pedaling the AI seemed hard going compared to last trip a few months ago. Other kayaks were doing laps around me and I was pretty tired as I got closer to Shark Island. Reaching for my drink bottle behind me I noticed my wheels were missing from the cargo area.... Yep still plugged in under the AI  As I unplugged them I noticed they were directly to the right of the side scan transducer. Wheels stowed topside I was off like a rocket and had both sides of the sidescan...

I spent awhile searching for the shipwreck before anchoring up off to the side to eat my left over pizza from the night before continuing on with the search. Traffic was getting pretty busy around the headland with whale watching boats, ferries, sightseeing vessels and other boats chopping up the water and leaving nasty prop wash clouding up the sonar picture. Anyway I eventually found the wreck of the TSS Currajong as I passed over the stern in about 25m of water. The ship sank in 1910 when run down by the SS Wyreema which was exiting Sydney
Harbour and in the wrong channel. She struck the Currajong amidships on the port side sinking her immediately.
More info here- http://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info/viewpage.php?page_id=57

Here's a rather poor side scan image. As you can see the prop wash is really clouding things up. Now I've got the waypoint marked I can try again early in the morning when traffic is light.

Tracklog of the trip.

Very light wind for most of the day

Great story and good to see you out again CGM. :)
I'd really like to join you on the Harbour with my TI some time.
I'm surprised you didn't pick the cart problem earlier.
Isn't this what was showing on your scanner?

Congrats David! You're not a true AI sailor till you've left the cart in at least once.

Last time we were out together I recall you assuring me that you could go faster then me - because my carft was still under the boat. Sorry I wasn't there to reciprocate ;-)

Good to see the thread active again.

PS. images less than 900 pixels wide fit better on my netbook.

Yes, had egg on my face but had to laugh. Fixed that pic. Size went a bit crazy. Must have copied the wrong one up.

Thanks for the report CowsGo. The Currajong story was a great read. I'm researching the Kawatiri wreck at the moment which is also a collier of similar size and date of sinking so this to me was a good read. I haven't left the trolley still connected yet, but I have got down to my launch site, unloaded everything, rigged up the AI and then realised my sail was still in the garage.
You are brave to admit it though, especially to this bunch.
And Stringy, I once sailed over the top of a naked female skindiver. I wonder what that would have looked like on the scanner.

Ah! So that's why you developed that viewing box.

Slaughter,
The truths out!
Just how much time have you been spending in your AI?
You could be suffering from the mermaid syndrome.

Is that a side scan sonar, or are you just pleased to see me? (Someone had to say it).

You're making me homesick !! I lived in Sydney for my senior year of high school (way back in 1967) and just loved that town then and even more now (was back in 2006). How I'd love to have my AI down under to do some of the runs you're chronicling here. Great shots and storyline. I used to sit in history class and watch them still building the Opera House back then. Wish it didn't take so long to fly there or I'd come every weekend ! :-)
