Interesting. I saw it posted enough times that I thought I'd try it.
What do you recommend instead Jeremy?
I try to get the threads that offer up bad advice before they go viral, and I missed a few penetrol threads. Sorry. I have done everything the wrong way on these boats over the years, and have wasted all the money that one would ever need to waste on a fun hobby.
For the xbars I don't recommend anything. If you want them to look new, there's only one way... Get new ones. I've heard of re anodizing, but have never done it. Why though? It would cost $$, take mass work and time, and you'd still end up with a 1980 (?) Hobie 16.
My advice is to sail it as much as possible. Use the money and timespent to go out to the lake with the family.Sail.
Keep the boat hosed off. Wax the hulls. Keep it covered. Buy a new(er) boat down the line.
Of course in the meantime, maintain your boat with the necessary gear to make it safe.the best upgrade for an old boat that's mechanically sound is to put a new suit of sails on her. They can be transferred to a newer boat down the line.
