Striny,

I have to be honest, I don't pay much attention to my windward ama when sailing. Next time out I'll take a look at mine and let you know if they are dropping down too.

Hmmm... no prob with my amas... yet. But only had them in hard action a coupla times so far. I get my tramps finally in a few days, I would expect they'd tension the akas a bit, creating more friction at the aka/ama connection. Of course I could be totally wrong!

You'll love them Max. Let us know what you think and if they change ama behaviour at all, IYHO.

There are lateral forces being applied by the tramps which provide initial stability but once the bungee is overpowered, they also try to pull the Akas out and towards each other. If anyone does eject an ama with the tramps on, you will understand what I mean.

If an Aka hops out of position, you will not be able to force it back in while on the water. The tramps will need to be unsnapped first. There is too much torque

At least, this is the case w my AI. TI owners w drooping amas might want to see if tramps help or hurt that situation.

Either way, double bungees should resolve this.

I went out today on my TI and took a hard look at my amas. They are not not dropping at all.

Got my parts and am working on the bungee mod. Great stuff.

Later, I will post yet another approach being tested in the Hawaiian Skunkworks, for TI owners.

This issue has been added to the Hobie Island Checklist.

NOHUHU, still interested in what the Skunkworks comes up with!

Here's my version of the Yakass's double bungee solution. Thanks to Josh for the idea and Jms2756 for posting the link! 8)
I wanted something that was easier to tension. These shockcord clips work well as occy strap replacements. I got them from Bias Boating -Cat No 4976
5-6mm. $1.95

Removing the end fittings I elongated the holes using a Dremel so that 2 lengths of bungee could fit. It's a tight fit but two tight overhand knots will fit in the end. Trim the excess with a hotknife. When refitting it helps to twist the cord 6 times to aid screwing in the last fitting as the two bungees don't rotate in the fitting.

After fitting the original bungee it's easy to tension up the second bungee.

I haven't tested it on the water yet but it works OK so far on land. The ama no longer drop when transporting the rigged TI. :)

Lovin the double bungees. Here's the finished job.
Image

Just one problem. It does NOT fix the rear Ama Puka (hole) issue cuz the rear Aka does NOT have 2 bungee cleats as seen here. It has one.

On my AI, only the front Aka has two and that's NOT where they are needed most. The rear Ama Puka is twice as shallow as the front one, and much more likely to hop loose. This is the behavior I see in rough water conditions.

I put modified padeyes in the rear anyway and will double strap the single cleat till I find something better.

Feels much better overall now. 2 tight bungees is exactly what is needed. Front and back.

You can pop-rivet another eyelet post (Hobie# 41220001 $2.70) on both rear aka to match the front. These are what I add about halfway down the front aka to mount the sprayskirt, so they can be reached to remove while on the water to fold in the ama.

Thanks Bob. I figured that would be the case. Appreciate the part number.

Can I do this with a standard heavy duty rivet gun?

I'm gonna assume the eyelet comes without hardware. Any info or picts of the aluminum rivet needed?

Yep, regular heavy duty pop-riveter

I use 3/16" dia. Aluminum for 1/2" - 5/8" grip range

Ace part# 2014132 for qty 10
