A nice article in the September 2010 issue of Sailing World about the 2010 San Francisco NOOD event. Nice pic of F18's starting with Greg and Jacques leading the way on their sexy red sailed Wild Cat. More pics at http://www.sailingworld.com/channel/pho ... d-regattas
Cool.

We contacted the host club first to show our interest in participating in the event. They went away for a while to, presumably, have a pow-wow then came back and added us to the invited list.

We, F18s, are now invited to all the West Coast NOOD Regattas. Those are Seattle, San Francisco, and San Diego. Dave Reed of Sailing World would be a good person to talk with, he is really excited about our class.

Later,
Dan

We would first need to know things like
how many boats ?
Is there a place to put the boats in ?
Last would they have us ?

We would need someone with some local knowledge.

The Detroit NOOD has three courses:
C - big, IRC keelboats - located north of the ship channel, south of Metro Beach.
B - "The 3 kt Sh!tBox Course" - located south of the ship channel (in Canadian waters) almost due east of Crescent Sail YC.
A - The sportboat course - also located south of the channel, but closer to the mouth of the Detroit River.

There are only two places to put in and they have problems:
Crescent Sail YC - Has a beach, but parking is a premium since there are a lot of boats going out of there already. Boats could be left on the beach, but trailers and maybe cars would have to be parked elsewhere.

Metro Beach - no overnight storage and the launching area sucks. I haven't been there in a couple of years because of that (and because I'm a member at Crescent).

Either place and you're looking at a significant hike to the race course. 3 - 5 miles. It's not logistically friendly at all.

As someone who has played an active role in the F18 participation in the West Coast NOODs I would highly suggest you contact Valerie Mey [Valerie.Mey(AT)bonniercorp.com]
She is the NOOD event coordinator and a pleasure to work with.
Tell her Don Atchley (me) forwarded you her contact information and that you want to bring the excitement to the East Coast.

You'll need 5 boats to enter, and 10 to garner your own start.

Tips: Bring it on early. Push your class to register as soon as registration opens online.
Communicate with the event leaders to make clear your intentions and requirements.
If you step up early and with commitments you earn credibility and the organizers are more than happy to try and make it a successful event for everyone.
Make sure when you are supporting the vendors or sponsors that you let them know who you are. It matters.

Contact me directly if I can be of any assistance.

Matt...

Maybe we should look into getting an F18 start at the Detroit NOOD. We might be able to work out launching logistics with Crescent. Could be the start of something big...and fun.
