I'm seeing wear and holes at regular intervals (7 with 3 holes) from the roach (worst wear and holes) to the luff (wear only). These are about 8 inches above the "Hobie" badge. I suspect the batten or rubbing against the A-frame.

What causes these? How can I prevent them and repair the damage?

Here's what we think happened: Normally, I lash the mast to the handles fore and aft and through the outside of the a-frame. But on this trip I saw both aft handles just tear away at the rubber grip. Not trusting them I lashed the mast to the center a-frame bar and to the strap holding the hull to the trailer aft. This put the mast against the rudder pin. And that's what punched 3 holes in my sail (and bag). All because these handles rot in the heat.
