The phone cord thing sounds clever. And cheap. My 2 favorite goals. Do you have picts of your fishing setup?

I do use the flimsy hobie brand rod leashes now, combined with a nylon line extension. The quick release plastic clips are convenient for passing the rod around the sheet and mast, but worry me a bit. But it's not that big a deal, for reasons I will explain.

I splurged on the Lightspeeds after alot of research and seeing all the cool PVC setups guys out here in the islands came up with. On the rear Akas, they keep the reels pretty dry, with or without tramps. Keeping the gear dry and the tramps functional were my first concerns. Another was not having any sharp edges that the supermodels could bruise themselves on. (Man can't live on fish alone,..)

The extreme adjustability of these units was also a plus.

The balls feel great now, thank you very much, but we'll see what happens as they age, wear and get really wet.

I mentioned that a buddy of mine uses these bad boys for his large tuna rods:
Image

They are very solid and adjustable, but mount low to the water, as you can see. and can not be removed. Close to $100 each. The rod can easily go for a swim.

With this particular RAM system, unless the ball fails completely, there is a near zero chance you are going to lose your rod/reel. When the lock is engaged, the rod clamp will not let it go. The leash provides redundant insurance.

Don't believe me? FInd a store with one and clamp a body part in there, then try to get it out. Just try,..

I do like those rod holders. I was about to order those at West Marine. But I had a few problems with it. 1. They only had the ones that would clamp onto either 7/8s or 1inch pipe. 2. They would not rotate side to side, thats what I need, I want the rod handel/reel portion close to me and the tip down and out to the side running parallel with the AKAs. 3. Too heavy.

I did find on the shelf a pair VERY cheap ($45 for two) that will due all of these except mount on the 1.75inch AKAs. They are for 1 inch. If it works out you'll need to get some pretty quick as they were a West Marine exclusive, made by Taco Marine but are no longer being made. They are very similar to this. see link-

I have a plan.

His model does pivot fore/aft and rotates but you have to set the angle you want and lock it in with bolts. It's a 2" model using a shim, which is easier to fit than extending and carving the 1.5" rail models.

Problem is, our Aka dimension is in another world (Hobies) and does not exist as any other standard for fishing gear or marine tubing. Plus 1.5" SS Ubolts are too small - 1.75 is too big. Almost guaranteed to slip.

If anyone wants to simply things, you can drill the Akas and open up all sorts of mounting options, including these:

Nohuhu,
Dude, I think I cracked the code on this tonite. I did my own measuremnts with my dial caliper. Someone reported a measurement of 1.75, 1 3/4. NOPE. Not on the AI 2010 make. Those AKAs are 1 5/8inch. The elbow ends are 1.630, the inner near the pin joint 1.626. Not sure of the TI. I am pretty sure I can get the 1.25-1.5 (IPS) clamps on them. They are the Taco "ready Acccessory clamps" in polished Alum. Pair it up with the Poly rod holders and its done. Light, Scotty type indexing and roatation in all directions. I will know by end of day friday. I had asked West Marine to investigate in the past if they would adapt, but they just came back and said "we dont think so. " I'm thinking Forget that, think pal,,,Find out,,DO DAMN it". Taco bills the "ready accessory" as an adaptable SYSTEM. The F36-2531 clamp and the F41-2700 holder. And they are slick, no sharp edges for the supermodels hinnies.

Update: Taco Support team said yes they are adaptable and splined the same. The inside diameter of the clamp is 1.66 so a wrap of the self fusing silicone tape will be just right. Pics to follow upon delivery.

sammy,

I was checking out the Taco Marine rold holders at West Marine before picking up the Scotty holders. Interested in seeing how it'll work out.

all,

I was able to take my TI out hard fishing yesterday. Took a couple of heavy fish strikes - one of them resulted in a crack in my rod holder mount:

Image

On the first fish strike, it immediately sounded and ended finding something on the bottom to cut my main line (80lb spectra). The second fish strike took me for a short sliegh ride. Ended up being a 6'+ reef shark.

Will have to go back and rethink how to fortify my rod holder mounts.

Yup - you'll need the stainless ones, and a bigger boat.

That's the same cutting board used to mount the downrigger, right?

nohuhu,

yup! that's the same cutting board that I used for my downrigger mount. No wonder there are no supermodels asking me for a ride.

C2Y, NOHUHU,
Yup, Thats what I was afraid of. But I will say i never thought that area would give way. I was thinking along the lines of a .750inch board and carving milling it out a lil bit to wrap the pipe for more grip.. Probably not an option now that I see your mount pic. I purchased my gear yesterday at West Marine. Major suck factor. $538.22 for 4. The Alum clamps are $81 each. The poly rod holders are $38. The poly clamps in our size (much cheaper) are not manufatured, only avail for 1inch. Now that I see this picture I'm kinda glad I didn't get them even if they were available, the plastic mounting post might snap. I think my setup will be able to tow a truck. We'll see, should be here by Friday at the lastest. :D

Took my TI out for another fishing run today. Despite the crack in base of my rod holder mount, the stainless steel pipe clamps are still holding tight.

But I believe my rod holder mounts still needs to be reworked. Anxious to see Sammy's setup.

No outriggers after that shark encounter?

There are steel balls somewhere on your TI.

Nice catch.

NOHUHU,

No "steel balls" on board. Single ama on other side of yak weighted with a fishbag and ice. :)

Been taking the TI out in single outrigger kayak mode. Kinda like Hawaiian outrigger canoe style. And liking it. At first, I was a little wary of not being able to pedal the setup fast enough to make some decent speed and distances. But the last couple of runs, I've pedaled around at least 10miles in 3-5' ocean swells and was able to keep up (and even pass up) my single man paddle and pedal buds. I'm surprise how much quicker it was to setup when you leave out the extra ama and sail rigging. Still need more time to test.

Back to the rod holder mounts. Repositioned one my rod holder mounts on the top of my aka. It cleared my paddle area better and it didn't get in the way of my pedalling if I needed to change the setting to above the number 5 setting. I'm thinking of using a 1/2" strip of Delrin that's the length of the cross bar between the rail mounts. Machine the bottom so that it sits like saddle across the bar and continue to use the SS clamps since they're holding quite well despite the cracked cutting board saddle on the side of the bar. This way I can install my Scotty mounts on top of the bar. May have to relocate the main sheet cleat as well. Will post the work in progress.

Aloha,

Nohuhu,

Nice! Shows what you can do with a CNC machine and Delrin stock. I have a friend on Oahu that has a CNC machine that he uses to machine aluminum for his fishing reel applications.

Having a Delrin platform on a TI cross bar may have other mounting applications. Seems like a strong unintrusive mounting option if you don't want to drill holes in your new AI/TI. I'm working on a prototype and will put it through a few tests the best way I know how - go fishing. ;) The idea doesn't look like it'll be too much trouble to setup his CNC. If there's more interest, a small group may be able to work a deal with my friend to machine a bunch.
