Just got a mast stepper II kit that I ordered and have a couple questions for anyone whom may be familiar with them. One, I assume that you tie the line you use to winch the mast up to the front stay wire, raise the mast, then attach everything? Two, there was a small piece of carpet in the package, what is it for.

Any other experience/tips with this would be appreciated..
thanks

Mac

For use on boat masts that rotate 90 degrees (Getaway,17,20,Tiger) when lowering or raising.

I'm not having much luck with this thing. When I raise the mast it tries to run to one side of the boat. When I lowered the mast it again tales off to one side. I'm scared that Im going to badly damage the boat and/or mast.

How do you guys raise/lower your masts? I would like to be able to do it by myself.

Not sure what you mean but you need to raise it and keep it from falling off to the side. The stepper will only do so much. Search for the 18 set up video posted on the forums or youtube, it'll help you.

Nevermind, I think you are saying you have a gin pole, sorry, I have never used one.

Hey Mac,

I use the front trap wires to stabilize the mast when I raise it solo.

I do this by running my jib sheets under and then back over the front crossbar through the gaps in the trampoline at the outer corners. I attach the jib blocks to the trap wires using a shackle through the thimble above the trap rig.

Tighten the jib sheets and they will keep your mast from falling over to the side as you step it.

I also use a prop to hold the mast a few feet above the level of the tramp. This makes it easier for the winch to get going. I use a 6 ft section of 4 inch pvc pipe with a notch cut in the top to hold the mast. I place the pipe against the deadeye on the rear crossbar and use a bungee to secure it.

This works great for me and makes stepping the mast pretty easy.

Good luck,

Michael

I don't have a gin pole. My mast support for trailering is the required 30" above the mast base. The line runs from the winch through a block and to the forestay. I guess I'm not tightening the trap wires enough to keep the mast from falling to one side of the boat when raising it.

Ill try using the jib lines next time and see how that works.

Using the jib lines is slick. You can get the lines tight and easily adjust tension as as the mast goes up.

Where do you hook the line from the winch to the mast? I've been having trouble there as well.

I use a D shackle through the eye of the hook of the winch strap and attach it to the adjuster on the end of the lower forestay.

Added some length to my mast stand to accommodate the 30" minimum height over front cross bar requirement for use of the Mast Stepper II. Mast was cranking up nicely and then I noticed it stopped moving. Further investigation revealed that the mast stand was tearing! :o Here it is in my truck, with a close up of where it started ripping apart.

So glad that bad boy did not blow off completely! It was under a lot of force when I noticed the issue and Ed and the twins where in close proximity!

Guess it is important to verify the integrity of the pole and realize the force it will be under.

Can you please send or post a picture of the blocks/pulleys that come with the Mast Stepper II system and how they are mounted to the mast stand?

Thanks,

Mark

One block, as high as you can get it (meet at least the minimum cited in catelog/instructions). I had to extend my mast stand.

Excellent, thanks. How did you extend your mast support?

Mark

My buddy the welder added a piece of steel. Meanwhile, now the mast rest is higher than I like, resulting in the mast sticking up very high. I will likely place another one at a lower point on the mast stand.
