H14T Shroud Tension

Just the other day I rigged my H14 to a Turbo.

The dolphin striker was already in place, and I'd picked up the Hobie Turbo jib and tramp blocks a while ago. I took the pigtail swivel stay, self furler and bridle from a recently acquired Maricat. (Thanks PJ).

I need the Jib Clew blocks (and maybe an adjuster) but that's about it.

I test rigged on the trailer and adjusted my shroud tension to about 45 degrees using the Curry Set Up Tips method.

I noticed when sailing and not on the trapeze, the leeward shroud was quite loose; flopping in the breeze almost. The wind was around 10 knots. I took a couple of pictures...



Does this look right?

On the 14, if you run your rig tension that loose, you should tie the mast base to the front crossbar so that if you capsize, the mast does not jump out of the step and cause a dismasting. The rigging guide you were looking at was for a racing set up. If you're just fun sailing, you should probably run your shrouds tighter so you don't risk dismasting.

Also, regardless of how tight you make your shroud tension on the beach, the leeward shroud will always go slack while sailing, even in light wind. This is because as soon as you pull on mainsheet and downhaul tension, the mast bends and the distance between the mast tang and the mast base becomes shorter.

Yep looks normal and as srm mentioned it's good to tie the mast down.

As mbounds taught me on here you wrap the excess main halyard around the dolphin striker and then around your halyard cleat, round and around. That keeps the mast in if you capsize.

Where's that shot is it Pittwater or were you ocean side?

In regards to the halyard, I have it tied as suggested. It's not quite visible in the image. Something I learnt here too.

The photo was taken near Smoky Cape, ocean side of South West Rocks, NSW.

Went out this morning & the southerly was building all the time. Launching from the beach was fun with the waves between 3-5 ft. Had a little flight over the lip at the edge of the breakers. A couple of walkers stopped for the show & I didn't want to go a$$ up!
