New: Raising mast on the water

Is it possible to raise the mast and rig a Getaway while on the water? I am looking to sail on a lake and would need to pass under a bridge. If it is possible, can one person do it or are two needed?

I noticed that there is an optional motor bracket for this boat. This is good because I would need power to get through the channel. Is there a place for a battery or fuel can?

Raising the mast on the water would be VERY tricky, but may be possible. I would not advise it. There is no current system to do that.

There is a "Cheata" motor bracket in the catalog to fit the Getaway, but there is nothing for batteries.

Matt, would it be easier to raise the mast from the water on a Hobie 16 or 20? Or is this something I should avoid altogether.

I would avoid it. The only boat we have set up that would allow it would the the 21 Sport cruiser. It had a pole stepping system that is independant from land or trailer.

I'd recommend going under the bridge and finding a beach on the other side to step the mast. You could step a mast by yourself if you rig some lines to hold the mast in place while you pin and tension the rig, but 2 people would definitely make it easier. You run the risk of damaging your rig if it get's away from you. Be Safe!

On the motor issue. I have a Gamefisher 3hp aircooled 2 stroke motor. It's perfect on the Cheata mount. It only weighs 25lbs, easy to mount and maintain. Look for them on Ebay. Another name for them is Tanka motors. You can still get parts for them from Tanka too. I found mine on Ebay for under $300 shipped to my house. Motor only has 10hrs on it, great shape. Take your time and find a good one.
