Peter - wow that's incredible!
I'd almost go as far to say that it defies the laws of physics!
You have come up with a very practical method of transportation for your big baby - and whilst I normally use a trailer, I fully understand there are lots of times when rooftopping would be the best/only option.

I wonder whether it would be possible to carry the TI using your design whilst towing a caravan with a Landcruiser or similar

Hobienutter, brilliant design and skillfully built! Obviously there are situations where car-topping has clear advantages over trailering for those who can take advantage of it. Your carrier really expands the options for hauling the TI. You should have patented it! 8)

I had a rack system with that type of gutter clamp on my 2000 Acura Tl. However, last year I got rid of the gutter clamp brackets, which were always finicky, in favor of a set of permanent mounting brackets sold by yakima that are bolted onto the roof. The rack system is now immensely more secure.

After losing my racks and a sea kayak several years ago, I never car top without bow and stern lines and if I see a car with a boat on top without bow and stern lines on the road ahead, I get out from behind as quickly as possible.

Hi Timo, The bow and stern lines are only there to prevent the flexing/oscillating of the boat in the wind with only a narrow clamped area on the rook rack. In NO WAY could these lines play any part in keeping the boat attached to the car in the event of it coming off. Think about it, you could put chains if you wanted to, but attached to the little eyelets on the bow and stern? On my rack I have taken the rack base out to 2.3 metres, where the hull has no chance at flexing at 110 km/hr highway speed.
It all comes down to the strength of the racks as a whole system and a VERY secure quality ratcheting web tie down system.
Additionally, I plan to replace the Thule brackets every 2 years as an added precaution. Peter

Hobienutter,

Great job. You really put a lot of thought and creaive design in to your rack.

You're right about trailers limiting where you go. I'd like to have but a rack like your's and a trailer like mine. The big advantage to my trailer is the time it takes me to launch is significantly less than yours. Since I can't have both (the wife would kill me) I'll keep the trailer.

I think you should sell your rack in kit form. I bet there are a lot of TI and AI owners who would buy one.

This thread needs to be moved to the Transportation/Storage topic.
Is there some way that this can be done?
Like so many other things, it will go unnoticed by many in its current location & is far too valuable to be buried.
Any thoughts

Hi Tiki Taki, thanks for the interest. The "loaded" side bar was in fact flexing  as I had run out of tube of the strength I needed and used one I thought "might" do the job :( . Proves that i should stick with my original plan. I have since replaced that side bar with a stronger one. Peter

Hi Hobienutter.

Great idea, I think I will build one of these to add to my existing setup see here. viewtopic.php?f=73&t=34859

Can you advise what size tubing you ended up using.
I love how this forum fosters sharing amongst the Hobie community.
Thanks
