Not really sure what is different in the way you initially installed our kit. We have not had problems here and have plenty of positive feedback from those who have installed it our way. Can it be better the way you have done it? Yes.
Matt, I spent two hours trying to fit the system and it still didn't work.
So I measured the path of each cord and it happened that right rope was longer than left 1/3 inch when turning. I went to my computer and draw (it was my job ) on a software the different ways with angles and notice angle 0° and 90° are same path and the more we approach 45° angle, the more longer was the path.
So I simply had the idea to add a trolley under the left one so the angles would be similar.
And in fact it works.

Most of time, people doesn't matter the way they use things. See the new side imaging or structure scan fishfinders. Who's use them full of possibility? 5, 10%.
Like you said if you don't have the ropes tight it works but your rudder is free, which is like coming back to the old system with the tiller under the seat and the impossibility to keep the cape.
In this way of life, I don't see any avantage in converting the system...
