The idealized tiller range (left diagram) produces the
same rotational range for both sides.

If an angle difference is introduced (right diagram)
on one side, the rotational range for that side is limited.

Is this what you meant?

Yes, it is limited because the right rope have more path turning left:

OK... So, I visited the engineers and looked at a boat with this upgrade installed. You are correct that the lines are tighter when making a hard right turn, although there is no loss of turning radius or function when properly adjusted. The lines on your system may have been too tight when steering was centered compared to what I just looked at.

While your solution is a good enhancement, the complication was not deemed by the engineers as worthy of the extra work involved in the installation. The system does work installed as they have designed.

I'm sorry Matt but it doesn't work.

Like I said:

- if you want to turn the same way each side, you have ropes loosen when rudder is right and this one go its own way.

- if you have ropes strained when rudder is straight, you cannot turn left.

I really see the difference when I changed the way...

Not really sure what is different in the way you initially installed our kit. We have not had problems here and have plenty of positive feedback from those who have installed it our way. Can it be better the way you have done it? Yes.

Matt, I spent two hours trying to fit the system and it still didn't work.

So I measured the path of each cord and it happened that right rope was longer than left 1/3 inch when turning. I went to my computer and draw (it was my job ) on a software the different ways with angles and notice angle 0° and 90° are same path and the more we approach 45° angle, the more longer was the path.
So I simply had the idea to add a trolley under the left one so the angles would be similar.
And in fact it works.

Most of time, people doesn't matter the way they use things. See the new side imaging or structure scan fishfinders. Who's use them full of possibility? 5, 10%.
Like you said if you don't have the ropes tight it works but your rudder is free, which is like coming back to the old system with the tiller under the seat and the impossibility to keep the cape.

In this way of life, I don't see any avantage in converting the system...

Not only is the retrofit line routed as we show, but current new boats are done this way.

Point taken though. We can improve the steering even more via your suggestion at little additional cost and will consider it.

Thanks "felvic"

So I'm still experimenting with grease and what not to see if I actually NEED the steering upgrade. My PA just will NOT steer on some days. It takes all my finger strength to turn the lever. Others say there steering is too loose and it moves on its own. I don't have that problem.

My rudder is free and easy to move and when the steering is off the seat but when I put it on seat it is in a serious bind no matter how I route the black tube.

I see the steering upgrade kit is for convenience as far as moving lever to a better spot for larger people. But are others having same problem as me? And yes I did do the Steering Drum upgrade/recall with no remarkable improvement.

Felvic,
Could you elaborate on the double pulley you bought with part numbers and a manufacturer?

Thanks
Scott

You should change for yhe new kit it's a real improvment.

I use the same trolley provided in the kit, just put one on another:

You are aware of the line tension adjustment knob? Once on the seat and each time in the boat this may need adjustment.

Matt

I'm having the same problem but mine might just need some grease. I had the dealer install the free replacement hub and I took it out for the first time Sunday. It seemed tight at first but doable. However, within 2 hrs, I coulds steer right ok but it became very very hard to steer left. I didn't adjust the handle though. Is there a special type of greese I should use? Is there something else I should be looking at? The hub looks like it was installed properly.

1) Use the line tension adjustment knob

2) Check the small screw on the bottom side. Seems to cause issues if too tight

3) Silicone grease

4) Replace the spectra lines. Older boats used a coated line that rubs (chatters) inside the control tubes.

Thanks ........

What do you use to replace the old lines

Replace with our standard spectra control line. They used a coated version only on early Pro Anglers and then discovered that it began to drag in the tubes, so reverted to the standard line as used on all other models.

It is # 81023001 LINE-CONTROL 1.75 MM
