Hope folks will save what's left of their rudders, as to make them available to Hobie for forensics.

When I looked at my TI rudder this evening it looked like there was a pattern of "swirls" in the area where your broke. Maybe I was imagining it - I shall have to take a look again in better light...

I noticed the same/similar thing today, when I had a close look following these posts. Had a good squizz at the rudder, and observed radial patterns originating just above the spot where the 'latch groove' is. Also noted there a spot where it looked like it had been 'cleaned up'. I'd guess that this is the point in the mold where the plastic is injected. AND it looks to be just about where the breakages shown above have occurred.

I haven't been successful at getting a picture that shows them yet...

Yes, we stopped shipping for a period of time to work out some issues on the rudder system.

The radial look near the failure emanates from the plastic injection point in the mold. Its from the flow of plastic. I believe we are seeing another variance in production here.

Rudder blades will be replaced without question.

We will announce some over all findings on the rudder system shortly.

I am willing to beta test any rudder changes...

Sounds like we figured it right!

Hi, I am a new TI owner and new to this forum. I had the exact same thing happen to me while I was on vacation in Florida sailing on the Gulf and had to go the nearest dealer to buy the new larger rudder. My broken rudder looks exactly the same as yours. Was wondering if this was covered under the warranty?

Yes, this is covered by warranty. The new rudder system will be available in about a month. That will cure the issue 100% I believe.

Hi Matt,

So was your Hobie dealer in Florida not supposed to charge me $45 for the new replacement rudder? If not, how am I suposed to get a refund?

Thanks

Steamy

Dealers would have to ask us (place a claim). They would assume you broke it if you didn't press them for warranty. Contact them and see if they will file a claim and then credit you back.
