I am thinking about a Wave. It looks like the ideal boat to me -- beginning sailor with two young boys.

But, I have bad hips and have trouble sitting on the floor (or, a pontoon) without back support for extended periods. I can't, for instance, sit cross-legged at all.

Does anyone have experience with the Wave backrest?

What happens if I sit on the backrest? I'm am the heavy member of the family at 160 lbs.

Sit on the seat backs? Not suggested, but at 160 it shouldn't be too bad. I think just having the seat back rest will help you a ton.

The Wave backrests have served a variety of good purposes for me. With wife and/or little kids, the backrests reassure people that they will stay on the boat. They do help me stay in the boat when I take it out solo in roughish weather. Lastly, when the wind dies and I'm listening to the baseball game on the radio, I can lean back and snooze a bit.
A good investment.

Sitting on the Wave backrests is not really practical. There are no toe straps within reach, and the backrests are only a padded, round tube.

is it a structrial thing? will the rests not support weight? what if you could install windsurfer type foot straps on the hull to put your feet when on the rest??

Yes, I certainly think it would be possible to install hiking straps or windsurf footholders on the hulls, sit on the backrests and hike out.

I have never even lifted a hull enough to want to hike. Most of the time when I sail in about 18+ kts. of wind on Puget Sound, the waves and chop slow the boat and keep me from powering up all the way.
If going off the wind in that much wind, I use the gennaker; and then the boat goes pretty fast. I have been at about 12 kts. off the wind (by GPS), which feels pretty much screaming. Both hulls are in the water, and I am sitting as far back as possible. Never pitchpoled it, or even come close. Lots of buoancy in the bows of the little boat.

I have two waves and I have back rest for both. I think its the best thing Iv'e bought for it. I have pitch poled once without them and I ended up wraped around the mast . I got a few bruises and shortly after that backrest. They are over priced but what are ya gonna do. any one know if there are after market back rest somewhere?

Trapeze or sit on Wave seat backs?

The seat back rests are not designed to be sat on. The tube when bent may fractyre the attachment fittings where they insert into the crossbars.

Aside from not being advised, I can't imagine trapzeing from the seat rests. The sail area is small. maybe a scaled down skipper... 50 lb? Still, not the intended purpose of these seat back rests.

Why don't we make seats for the Wave?

The boat is too small. Weight outboard on the seat without balancing weight of the boat or sail power would cause the boat to heel to weather excessively.

The hull volume and boat structure do not accommodate the extra forces you could place on them with excessive hiking forces enabled by sitting and hiking outboard further on a wing.

I never felt I needed to hike out much and I never get on top of the back rest it just isn't nessasary besides I woudn't want to damage the boat. A trap you just don't need one. The Wave rarely ever flies a hull but the back rest are great.

I bought backrests for a used wave but can't get them to stay in place. Every time I lean back, they pop out of the fitting. How do you get the backrests to stay put?

Thanks.

There should be a screw or pin at each crossbar attachment point. The seats come with 4 screws and instructions for placement. Basically, you drill down though the deck / crossbar / wing leg and install a screw the passes through to lock the wing in the crossbar.
