I'm wondering why the Cheata mount is so long? Is there an advantage to having the thrust so far aft? Can I shorten it to make the motor controls easier to reach as long as it can pivot out of the water without hitting anything, or is there a reason to leave it long?

To clear the rudder cross bar. It's fine when the motor is in the water, but when you flip up the motor, it moves closer to the cross bar.

Motors come in different sizes, it's probably made one size to accommodate most.

And clear when steering hard over... tiller crossbar moves aft as you steer further over.
