I just bought new Hobie aluminum rudder pins. They are too long, they hit the drain plugs. They measure 8-3/8" The old ones are 8". The old ones almost hit the drain plugs, in fact I push the pin up, tighten the plug, then drop the pin. But the old ones just barely touch the plugs.

The new ones hit the plugs and don't seat all the way.

The packaging said 14/16. Did I get the right ones? Or were these mis-packaged?

The 14 and 16 use the same rudder pin, so the package is correct.

8" is the correct measurement for the pin. I don't know what an 8 3/8" pin would be for (17/18/Wave pin is 9").

Sounds like they might have been miscut. Easiest thing to do may be to trim them off and re-drill the cotter pin hole. Depends on how much of a hassle it is to return them.

I picked up a set of new rudder pins because the ones on my recently purchased H14T were also blocking the drain plugs. The new pins I received were even 1/2" longer than the ones on the boat! :o I now have a set of 8" pins that are too long and another set of 8 1/2" pins that are WAY too long. The problem is that the transom on the 14 is somewhat shorter than the 16 but they use the same lower rudder casting. Cutting and drilling aluminum is pretty easy but getting the hole centered without a drill press is not. I left the 8" pin on the boat and just lift them up to get the plugs in. It's little bit of a bother but...

That's the original way the rudder pins on the 14 were captive - the drain plug kept them from falling out the bottom. You inserted them with the cotter pin on the bottom and the drain plugs out. Once you put the plug in, the rudder pin couldn't go anywhere.

I had the Hobie dealer measure a set off the shelf and they are also 8-3/8" long. So exchanging will not help.

I will have to see if there is any interference with them riding high in the casting and rubbing against the drain plug.

Cutting, beveling, and drilling isn't a road I am eager to go down right now.

Trimming a pair of aluminum rudder pins is incredibly easy and only requires basic hand tool skills. With a sharp hacksaw blade and a decent flat file, trimming and deburring can be done in a matter of seconds. Having a bench vice helps too, but isn't absolutely necessary. To drill the cotter pin hole, first use a centerpunch to keep the drill from wandering. These are tools that you'll continue to use throughout the the ownership of your boat (not to mention the rest of your life). Really not a big deal at all.

Fyi...

The drawing on the Hobie 16 rudder pin shows 8 3/8"... since 1980.
