Hmm, I bought mine from a dealer and received no "screws" or directions at all. (He bought them from Hobie direct 2 days earlier)

Are these flat head, machine head screws, such that I need to tap and die the holes for threads?

Can I get some shipped from Hobie?

When sailing in heavy air I always sit way back over the rear cross bar. The back rest are great for that, never in the way in fact they help you stay on the boat and not get tired. Do it. If you mount them with the removable pins tie a small line around the back rest where it goes into the cross bar and through the ring on the pin so they don't work themselves out. Plastic zip ties work good too.

The packet with the screws and instructions is commonly tossed with the packing material.

Instructions: http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/38040011.pdf

The screws are #8 x 1" Flat Head sheet metal screws.

You drill through the deck, sleeve and backrest leg with a 5/32" bit. Pull the backrest out and enlarge the hole in the leg to 3/16". Re-insert the legs and thread in the screw. The tip of the screw would sit in the 3/16" hole loosely to allow for the seat to move a bit, but it keeps the seat captive in the crossbars. You can also use quick pins.
