Stepping mast on hobie 16

Ok. Thanks for the advice guys. I will put it into effect this upcoming weekend because I forgot to put a mast bearing in when I stepped my mast this past weekend so I'm gonna lower my mast insert the bearing and then re-step. Any advice on doing this? I'm thinking I might just attach the step link, lift the mast out of the socket, throw the bearing in and then reseat the mast. I'm sure it's not that simple but one can hope...

I use an electric winch all the time. Takes a min or 2 to set-up--never a problem lifting/lowering the mast. I recommend it highly.

I had the same problem and took a 1/4" drill and ran it through the link and mast base. Only removed a little metal but the pin goes in and out like butter now.

I'm in my early 60's with two stents in my arteries. I decided to take up sailing and recently bought an 82 H16. On a 95+ day, stepping that mast and rigging to sail can work you over pretty good.

Can you send a picture on how you have it setup?

Most trailers I've seen have a vertical post (mast stand) with a manual winch at the front. I attach the elec winch to the post with some bolts and plates and it sits vertically on a little shelf part of the manual winch. Just barely. I hook it to a battery--kind of like a golf cart battery--small. I added some elec line to the manual switch--enough so I can stand on the tramp and lift the mast with my right hand and operate the switch with my left. I attach the winch hook to the forestay. The elec winch lifts the mast--I just guide it. 2-3 min at most to set it up. I'll see if I can get some pix this weekend to show you.
