I have the inside sanded and have faired it in, ready to glass. MattM suggests a patch that is 12" x 12" of mat followed by cloth. My question is whether the patch should be applied as one piece or several overlapping pieces? It would be easier to work with several pieces but I think one piece would be stronger.

How did those of you that have done this do it? How well did the glass conform to the shape of the hull and saddle?

Thanks

Best person to ask IMHO is CentralMichiganSailor.
He did a beyoooootiful job on his old H18.....he used wide strips, diagonally, from the deck, across the joint, down the hull and up the other side, across the other joint, and up to the deck again. Nothing like a full wrap system.

I can't recall, each strip may have been 12" wide. What I do remember is that the two strips formed an "X", with the centre right at the centre of the front cross bar.

Caleb, did you take pictures of that sort of stuff in those days?

Mike, as I understand it, the key is to take the boat apart, and work with the hulls inverted so you can make certain that the hull/deck joint is properly glassed. (No air entrapped). For more working room, remove the port hole fitting....carefully.

Good luck, take and post pictures.

Now I'm more confused! My understanding is that the inner side of the hull only needs to be reinforced. Your description makes me think I should run glass from the deck across to both hulls. I thought the patch went from the saddle area to 12" forward of that point, glassing the hull side to the deck.

Did you mean that the strips crossed at the bracket location not the center of the saddle?

The factory 'tab' on my 1989 SX 18 is a patch of cloth, about 5" x 5", with about 1 1/2" of the top of the square on the deck, running across the joint, then down the sidewall of the hull about 3 1/2 or 4".

Like Matt M said, 12" x 12" is better. Caleb went even further.

Why don't we let Caleb describe what he did....he is much more knowledgeable than I. With luck, he may have pictures. I can shoot some pictures on Friday.

What is clear is that the sidewalls of the hulls need reinforcement to accept the vertical load imposed by putting weight on the wings. The hull/deck joint also needs additional support.

Happy Canada Day to all.

Dude cutting glass as I type. Aprrox 14" x 40" piece of Biax coming your way.(3/4oz matt stiched to 17oz. cloth).
12x12 patch with this should be all you need, but you could do another layer on top like maybe 9x9".
My patch is just like Johns btw on my 89.

Thanks Matt! Got an email from Matt Miller that cleared it up for me.

Both sides need to be glassed, not just the inner.

The 12" patch is centered under the crossbar, not forward of the saddle

Need to fill the voids and create a smooth transistion from the hull to the deck.

I may take pics as I go but need to hurry up on this so may not.

Apologies for not chiming in, I have been extremely busy working on the new boat.

Essentially what John said...use glass to transfer the concentrated load at the shroud anchor plates out and away...there is a thread somewhere describing what I did, but I don't believe I snapped any pics...
