Ups dropped mine off Saturday. I put them on and went fishing Sunday morning. I love them.
My rods are close at hand, but not in the way of landing fish. Great job Hobie!!!!

Did you not install the clasp part of the kit (butt end)?

No sir, I haven't had a need to yet. my goal was to have three rods on-board for bass fishing.
I got the Hobie "T" handle :http://www.austinkayak.com/products/1247/Hobie-Paddle-T-Handle.html
And have the half paddle strapped to the rear, behind me. This allows the two rods to be secured with the paddle strap on each side of the kayak.

The third either goes in a rod holder behind me(if I'm not going through heavy trees), Or will simply lay down on the right side beside the down rudder control.

I might at some point mount the clasp part. But as of right now this is working great.

Nice thing about the clasp is that it creates a sort of shelf for the rod butt when opened. In your case you have to hold the rod if you undo the bungee. The clasp allows you to release / open and have ability for a quick grab (or set down) of the rod.

Well I have been using mine for a few months now and I have to say that I am extremely pleased. I bass fish in very heavy timber and have a habit of playing bumper cars with large trees. Even with being repeatedly slammed against trees,boat dock,etc.... The holders are holding up fine.
One thing that I would advise is to turn your rod so that the eyes are pointing towards the kayak. I have bent the eyes on my rods a couple times because of bumping in to passing trees. I sure am glad hobie came out with these. They have made it a lot easier to get back in the heavy cover I like to fish.

I have been using mine for a while now, and I don't like them, particularly while landing in the surf, the thing is that when I jump out of the kayak I touch the rods with my legs or body, and that make the tip of the rod pop out even while having it shoved to the very end of the holder. I been too close to braking a rod too many time with this. I'll take my chances with my rods on the back vertical holders.

I just order a set from Austin Kayak along with their Camel Cart.

Some of my Two Handed Spey/Switch rods cost about as much as a lot of yaks.

My fishing areas are like yours, and I have avoided the good areas because I didn't want to snap a rod tip or worse off in a tree, bush, brush, dock or whatever.

Good feed back Dan. I'm sure with any product there are going to be circumstances where a product shines and those times when the product might not be the best option. I've yet to be able to go fish the surf. So I don't have the experience of going through huge waves like that at the surf while landing.
With the smaller waves of a lake of 2-3' as I'm getting out on the bank I can say that I haven't experienced and problems with bumping in to my rods. Thanks again for the input. It's always good for people to know what to be careful for.

Yeah you in the surf it either pushes or pulls you quickly once you "beach" the fron of the kayak, I'm probably just too old and need some oil in my joints.

LOL.. Dan I'm 45 and my joints need some oiling in the mornings too! Heck, after I've been sitting 12 hrs in my kayak it's funny to see me straighten back up. I'm comfy as long as I'm sitting down but standing up is a killer.
