Hello, I am sailing in the long island sound, and I have been sailing my hobie 16 for a while, and I wanted to find another step up. I want to find something that I can take 1 or 2 friends on once and a while (not very often) but something that I can race in an open class that is very fast. I was just wondering if the fx one can accomplish all of these tasks like the 16 has done for me all these years.

Yep. The FXone is still one of my favorite boats.

I will add the FXone is a (censored) to right singlehanded. You'll need a bag or pole to right it in most conditions unless you are a really big guy. I'm 6'-2" and ~160lbs, and unless it was absolutely nuking I had to use the bag.

So now I want a FX one but I can't find any in CT that I can afford, if I sell my sixteen for at least 1300 I still can't find a FX one for that price, and I don't really have an extra 9 thousand dollars laying around. So if I could I would but for right now I might get a hobie 17, which there are plenty of around here. As long as I can get a fast uni-rig that I can single that is also hobie.

Can you find any that you can't afford?! Wasn't aware that there were a whole lot of them out there. There was an FX in eastern NC for $10K. Be nice if there were as many FX's around as there are Tigers.

no I can't find any used/ affordable ones anywhere, I just saw one at the boat locker the other day for $18,000!!! Which I cannot afford at all, and then when I looked for used ones I couldn't really find any. I do agree that there should be more around, I just wish there were more uni-rig's in general.

Karl, have wanted to ask how F16's mast compares to the FX mast...

After looking at a Nacra mast that was about the same length as the FX, it was hard to figure how the FX mast compares. Is the heft/weight difference for spinnaker option? Or durability? Or are new masts just technically better and lighter? Since you've owned both...

The FXone mast is a frickin barn pole, its a cut down Tiger mast. Teardrop shape vs. a wing mast on the F16. My F16 uses an old aluminum A-cat profile, so it is fairly light.

Performance wise there really is no comparison, the wing mast on my boat is much lighter and very controllable. Downhaul and rotation didn't do much on the FXone, just because the mast is so stiff.

Durability wise there is also no real comparison. The FXone mast would be extremely hard to break, whereas with my boat you stuff hard in bigger wind, and lose mainsheet tension you will break it. The FXone is a terrific first spinnaker boat for those reasons too.

Does anyone know how the FX one compares to the Nacra formula 17? Speed wise, performance wise. Also is one easier to tack in than the other? I am really just trying to narrow down my choices for finding a good high performance uni-rig that I can maybe afford.

Thanks for good answers, Karl. Always assumed the minor control on downhaul and rotation on the FX since the mast is like it is. Nothing to compare it to locally since there are few other brands sailing regularly. There are some H17's around and their masts on that platform look even bigger.

hookey, don't know anything about Nacra 17 but from my point of view all the boats 16' and up are on a different, faster level of sailing. That may even include a newer H16. First difference is a larger number of things you can rig up. While it is true of all sailboats 17' and up, you really have to learn the rigging -- to the point, in my opinion, where you first have to become good at rigging up in the backyard before you even get out in the beach. Then there's controls on the water to learn, of course. And if you get an older boat, there is working with dealers for replacement parts or optional stuff which is something H16 owners don't deal with as much because the boat has been around so long and the parts and extras have been designed, modified, improved, and are available and the dealers know H16 parts pretty well. The bigger boats are a great experience, for sure. But I wish the FX were as quick and easy to rig as the Wave! And there were more of them.
