Aloha Matt and All,

I am seeing wear and possible cracking on the AI's AKA brace cap, which takes a lot of stress. As a precaution, I would like to replace the aging plastic parts at both ends of my V1 AKA braces. There are no pictures or manuals describing this, so I need help with the parts and assembly info.

These are the parts I think I need for the rebuild.

For the hull connection:
79524001 CAP / AKA BRACE LOCK
79523001 SOCKET / AKA BRACE LOCK
81242001 SPRING / AKA BRACE LOCK
8030781 SOC CAP SCREW
79525001 BALL - AKA BRACE

For the AKA connection:
8032081 SHEAR BOLT
8052081 NUT
79536001 BRACE CONNECTOR
8020381 CLEVIS PIN
20860000 SPLIT RING

My questions:
1. Am I missing any parts?
2. Will they all fit my 2007 vintage braces?
3. What is the procedure for breaking down and assembling the spring-loaded cap end of the brace? I took the soccap screw out but nothing wanted to come loose from there. This spring cap is a critical piece. How is it held on?

And BTW, WTH are these?
79537001 CLIP, ISLAND AKA BRACE KIT (2) ??
79526201 ISLAND PADDLE / AKA BRACE KIT ??

I also need to replace a aka brace cap. Did you receive an answer or learn how to remove the cap?

Thanks,

I don't have a "procedure" for replacing the cap, but should be straight forward. There is an allen bolt on the bottom that retains the cap under spring load as I recall. Remove the screw to remove the cap.

You expect me to remember THAT far back?!! :?

Lessee,.. The outer release cap slips over the inner socket joint. Probably through the large cap opening. The spring is then inserted between them. The assembly is then compressed while the plug-end of the socket is inserted into the brace tube. Line up the screw holes and insert the socap screw. This holds the whole thingamajig on.

The cap is now held captive and should have enuff pressure to grip the brace ball, (which is secured to the gunwale).

Make sure the ball brace is screwed and glued tight. It's another point of failure.

Got any aspirin?

Thanks for posting those part numbers.

It would be really helpful if Hobie would provide a comprehensive parts list to make it easier to order parts. If I want to order a part I have to describe it to my Hobie dealer and hope that the correct one for the correct model year is ordered. It's a multi step process that often requires a trip to the dealer.

Are you referencing the catalog parts listings?

So are you saying that I should assume that when part numbers are not shown on the TI drawing, use the ones on the AI drawing ?
Thanks
Chris
