I put the Hobie bimini sunshades on our Outbacks and on the first outing the little rubber bolts just pulled out. We can not reach up where the holes are to put in proper nuts and washers. Has anyone else had a problem getting these to stay on correctly or found a way to mount them securely?

You need to tighten a well nut a LOT to expand effectively inside the hole.

Can this be used on a tandem Island? One for each seat, or maybe just one on the rear seat?

For the TI you use different size biminis in the front and rear seats. See hobie accesory catalog.

All I can find in the catalog is:
HOBIE BIMINI SUN SHADE (*Requires mount)
72700 Bimini Charcoal*
72701 Bimini Blue*
72702 Bimini Green*
72710 Hobie Mount
I don't see any different models for any other applications.

Oops! My bad. I was thinking about the dodger, not the Bimini. Sorry.

I just rigged an umbrella on a PVC pipe set up in the starboard scupper hole behind the front seat on my TI. Gonna try it out tomorrow, I'll let you know if it works.

Gotta keep the bride cool if I want her to noodle around the lake with me. Of course we can't sail like this but it's for her to sit and play on her iPad while I troll...ah, the joys of retirement!

Put a hinge on the stem and you can also use it as a sail !

Here's the golf umbrella bimini I mounted to the Sidekick crossbar on my Adventure.

Looks like you need a bigger umbrella!

These are called Gustbusters. They are stronger and more corrosion resistant, more heat reflective and provide good coverage. I tried it out under sail and it provides great shade. It's tricky to tack without taking it down, but it can be done. The problem is that it robs wind from the sail. I know this because i was sailing with a friend who is bigger than me, and, consequently, slower, but he was passing me when I had the umbrella up. None the less, it could be useful.
The two supports are bolted with thumb nuts through the cross bar and slotted into the scupper holes. The larger pvc section, glued to the umbrella handle, slides over one or the other of the supports.

Well, that photo pretty much says it all. PVC just small enough to fit in the scupper holes and they lead right up against the crossbar with enough height to to allow for the PVC piece on the umbrella to slide onto the smaller pvc. I used stainless bolts for the crossbar and a quick disconnect to go through holes in the two overlapping pvc pieces. You will have to file down the rubber umbrella handle for a nice tight fit into the larger pvc piece. I used a knife and carved it down, then smeared it with goob and shoved it into the pvc piece.

This is where I got the umbrella:

I tried the more expensive mantis bimini and think this actually works better. Salt water may get to the spring mechanism, but all of the struts are made out of pretty thick plastic.
