ISAF Worlds Updates

Well its official - no racing today.

Tomorrow looks to be the same weather pattern....we`ll see.

For those that may not understand (I didn't) This is a qualification series. They need to be in the top 12 to get into the Gold fleet next week.

There are about 6? teams that were pre-qualified for the gold fleet and have not yet been sailing. That is why a bunch of the top guys are not listed in the results...yet.

Next week, the scores are cleared and we start again!

Whoo Hoo -- The Americans finally got their scheisse together! Well at least after Greg finally made it to the boat park just in time to push off on the water (Thanks Oli for going to wake him up!) We thought that our races would be in the afternoon since there was no racing yesterday...but the organizers changed the groups after including drop scores.

Anyway...to the good part.

Today our results were a 2 and a 1

We started the day in 7th overall and have for sure moved up after today´s good fortunes.

It was really spotty and light but we were able to keep the boat moving and capitalize on a few mistakes by the Ricans missing a layline in the first race to move past into a good second place made a nice move for the victory over the French team in the second race.

All-in-all a good day.

The blue fleet is out on the water as I write this after a lengthy delay for lack of wind.... but they are laughing now since they have the best conditions we`ve seen in a few day...nice wind about 12 - 15mph.

In that fleet if the guys ahead have a bad one we will certainly move up in the overall.

Tomorrow is the last day of qualifying and a lay day is scheduled for Monday (planning on having a look around Vienna hopefully)

Annie had a third in her race today...not sure about Sandra...sorry.

Today the final qualifying races were run. We were able to get a good result of second in the windy conditions...normally not our strong point.... and the others in front in the overall had troubles.

This gives us the overall victory in the opening round.

Tuesday starts the Gold fleet series - where the invited top sailors will joint the top 14 from this series just completed.

This was a long comeback for victory for us...starting the first day in 10th.... moving up all the time daily until the last heat placing first (tied the PUR crew and won on the tie breaker)

Tomorrow there is a well deserved day off - then we get back to business on Tues.

Tonight we party at the prize giving ceremony!

First day of the Final series and...no wind...

Another day of sitting on the beach. The Gold fleet actually left the beach this morning and started a race in around 6 knots of wind, but halfway up the first work the wind dropped in half and then further up the work the wind completely shut off. Race abandoned, towed back to the beach. The silver fleet and the womens racing has been cancelled for the day but they're keeping the Gold fleet around as we may get a bit of wind this evening, it's a quarter past 4 now and there is a trickle of wind. Could be a late night.

A night to forget!

Finally put on the water after 6pm.....What can we say but we had two shockers.... but funny thing is we beat Mitchy in both...how's that?

Anyway, the committee decided to send us out super late - in what I call questionable conditions... there were HUGE shifts - like over 100 degrees... we were on the receiving end of a butt kicking....

We all know there is lots of racing to come so we'll stay positive. (we started slow in the qualifier too)

Tonight we just got back to the hotel at 9pm and we're about to sit down to a Hungarian meal prepared by our hosts (from scratch I might add....its all happening in that kitchen right now - smells good too)

Tomorrow we'll get the lead out.

Sorry to report bad news again.... today was totally
out of control.... first race was so - so .... but in
the second we got blown over and actually hit the
bottom in the process with our leward bow (this mud
puddle we sail in is only 3 - 4 feet deep) only six
boats or something were even able to finish the race -
almost everone was knocked over in the squall (and
these are the best guys in the world....

Anyway, in the acident I hit my face on the mast....it
made a crunching sound and I feared the worse... we
didnät continue the race.... I was picked up by a
safty boat and taken straight to the hospital for x
rays (came back negative for brain matter) but a small
hairline crak above my right eye socket.
Greg was able to make it back to shore with the help
of the Aussies who jump onto his boat and helped to
gring it back..... many teams had big damages (which
cost us money) lucky for us just a small ship in the
bow (from the bottom!) 14 euros.... thank you very
much, so much for not having to pay for any
damages...this ws one of our goals

Iäm back from the hospital and doing OK, but am
sporting a fairly sweet shiner - Iäm gonna hit the
rack and see how I am in the morning... hopefully my
right eye won.t totally close up so I should be able
to go again tomorrow (we expect more normal
conditions)

What a bummer.... the tale of two weeks... last week
was good, this week is not so great.

There are 4 more races scheduled and we,ll try our
best to salvage some results .... our goal I think now
is to make the final medal round on Saturday...but
there a bunch of work to do in order to move up in the
overall,

two more races today.... same results - well not really.

We were up there in both, the first race rounding in third only to have a foul with our spi halyard - that cost us big time! I couldnä.t get the knot out of the line forever.... we wound up 12th.

the next race winds were fairly steady and hit left hard all the laps... missing a layline to the change mark to lose two spots but in the end we were 7th across the line... our best race so far in the finals.

Tomorrow is our last chance for glory - two more races then they will split the feils for the medal race on Sat. We need to make up 15 points in two races to crack the top ten.... there is still hope.

My eye is doing better (doesn,t look it but it feels allot better)

Anyway _

Today was our last day on the water. Both races we were average... Had some good speed but also made some more mistakes.... it is just the way this week has gone for us.

We missed the medal round so tomorrow we get the day off!

Our good friends from Australia, Darren and Glen, have sailed awesome and have this regatta in hand. It was a pleasure to get to compete against allot of old friends from the Tornado class - and also to see where were are in terms of our sailing.... we need to improve it seems - but overall we sailed our butts off, just that maybe this regatta was tooooo long (two weeks)
I.m beat!

We.ll be heading home on Monday, working the month of June. We,ll make our return to Europe for the F 18 Worlds in France in July, then head off to Spain to try again to win the Tiger Worlds. (we,ve been 5th and second...still trying to win it)

The Worlds are finally over.

Susan and I had a great time racing together and went from 1st to 3rd
and back again overall after almost every race.

After 13 races over 10 days of competition and it was a marathon of
sorts. Staying focused was key. Needless to say I am tired!
The competition was incredible and we feel good about our results
although a Gold Medal would have been awesome. We were only 4 points
behind first but the last race was a fiasco. Only one boat finished
within the new time limit and the rest of us had to take a DNF (did not
finish). Crazy new system and it's all about TV.
