Got some unusual species?

Post here.

How about this one?

Image

It's a giant needle fish, commonly called a "stick fish" in Hawaii. Hawaiian word is aha.

Drop your bait in shallow near the reef and these buggers will eat it every time.

Even the fish world is part Charlie Brown. Here's the trevally version of Pig Pen . Black Jack:

Not sure if it was a true Black Ulua, snout looks pretty smooth versus indent. But it was around 35 lbs.

What about some of those California ugly looking things that still taste pretty good?

Here's an unusual one I caught today. The body was very ribbon like, and actually extends several inches past my left hand.

A snake makerel

According to Jim Rizzuto a member of the gempylid fish family.
There are 24 different species and this is one is the most common off the Kona coast.
.
They are usually deep feeders caught at night. Jim states it was interesting that this one was up on the surface.

After some debate the above fish has been identified as a long nosed Lancet.

Rare for Hawaiian waters. No state record, so I put in for one. Will see what happens.

Well these arn't funny, but maybe unusual for a midwestern type.

How about a kaku? (barracuda)

Don't east coasters have these false albies I believe (kawakawa). This one was pretty fat.

Very nice! That fist one looks like what we call a Hound Fish in florida. They can swim and get up out of the water except for the tip of the tail. I have almost been hit by one while in the kayak.

Well I'm just a few years late getting a followup shot of a malolo. But here it is.

Image

Again caught on a pink nehu.

A fellow Hobie yaker also caught one in the same vicinity using bait. He then sent his down and caught a mahi. Me? Nothing. Didn't get a hit on my briddle rigged fish. Other guy just used a nose hook. Not sure if the aku (skip jack bridle) didn't interfere with bait action, as unlike other bait fish in tuna family (aku, shibi, etc) the malolo eyes popped out undertrolling pressure.

That's a wild looking fish. I need to get out in the salt one of these days.
