Cart Mod

Alright. This cost a bit of money but I think it was worth it. I took the Hobie Traxx2 cart and bought some 30cm rec wheels from Wheeleez. Since they are much larger than the 24cm wheels that come with it, they wouldn't fit on the axle. I took this over to a local welder and he extended the axle about 6 inches from the middle. So, now I have this buggy to drag my Pro Angler across the sugar beaches we have here on the Emerald Coast.

Awesome job. Nothing but wheeleez for our sugar sand!

I like the idea of six inch increase to the wheel base... i have not done because hard to get to a welder... Thanks for the post... Great job on the cart.

Just curious about your launching technique. Do you walk your PA out into the surf and then pull the wheels out from beneath, or do you tip it on its side on the shore to remove the wheels and then drag it into the surf? I had considered doing a similar mod, but the beaches I launch from are mostly rocky, so I end up attaching and detaching the wheels while floating in 2 ft of water. The bouyancy of your larger wheels seems like it would make that technique more difficult.

I tip it over and pull the wheels prior to launching in the surf. Actually never tried to launch with the wheels still in.

We have the big wheeled Hobie cart and its big tires float in the water which make it difficult to get out of our Oasis or in.

This new cart should work on the PA's with its 160# payload.

Have you tried that cart with the PA? It doesn't look like it is well suited for the hull shape at all. The trolley's convex pads appear to lend themselves to a single point of contact in an un-reinforced area -- I'm concerned that without cradling the hull, the weight of the boat would cause dents at the points of contact:

I usually have lots of gear in the cockpit or on the back deck that would need to be removed and reloaded if I were to tip the PA on its side to insert the wheels. This includes things like the Mirage Drive, paddle, several rods in the back holders, net, water bottle, lunch cooler, various odds and ends in the mesh pockets, etc. For me, its a lot easier to remove and insert the wheels while floating.

Is the PA so tender underneath, it can't handle being on something like the Camel Trolley for a few minutes and few feet up to 100'? Probably not.

We are not talking about storing it or towing from our house to the water.
