So when I tore the hobie apart I noticed there where no "vent tubes" in the front pylon. I'm not too sure what they are and I forget who said it but it was mentioned briefly in another post. What are they for and how I should I replace them before I re-foam them.

the vent tube is that little tube in the center of the pylon:

If your hulls are tight the heating / cooling (expansion / contraction) of air in the hulls will do some major delam damage not to mention the condensation in the hulls it is has no where to go.

If they aren't there i can't imagine what would have happened to them.

Probably been replugged already with the tubes omitted. I think any kind of small plastic (1/4' dia.?) tube would work so long as it wasn't damaged by the new foam (assuming you're using expanding foam). I think you can actually buy the factory foam plugs from Hobie.....not sure if they come with the vent tube or even a pre-made hole for it.

It looks like they re-foamed them without putting in the tubes. Expanding foam, is there a special kind or can I use the stuff from my local hardware store? And would 1/4 or 1/8 be better for the tubes? Can't imagine it would have to be bigger than 1/8.

Hello,

i see no follow up here.
I've also recently purchased a used Hobie 14 and found there are no vent tubes. The foam in the posts looks like the original stuff, although dried and flaking away.

I pulled them all out and there is no vent tube. I can see the lower plugs or foam base and there is no sign that anything ever came up from the bottom of the pylon.

Is it possible the Hobie 14's did no originally come with these tubes?
My hull is old as in #5067 stamped on the forward pylons.

Any way to verify if the 14's ever had the vent tubes?

I guess, of more importance, how do I install them after market without damaging the base of the pylon or whatever is down at the bottom supporting the pylon?
I suspect the pylon sits on a solid flat piece of wood and there is no hole for the tube to pass or it's covered up by the foam at the bottom.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just leave the drain plugs out when the boat is not in the water and you will be OK. At least that's what I would do. It is not a lot of pressure build up inside the hull unless you drive across a mountain range.... Besides, if your hulls take on water after a day's sail, then they are already "vented." I wouldn't go adding any more holes to them.
