Are Dacron Sails One Design legal? I'm needing to order some new sails for my 18 and looking for the best sail for the money, new or used. I don't want to buy one i'll later regret.
Thanks.

H18 uses Dacron. H18Sx uses Mylar.

Only factory supplied sails are class legal.

Since the 18 is no longer in production you shouldn't worry much about class legal sails. If the sail you purchase is the same size or smaller most race comitties will overlook it. You stand the risk of being protested if you race successfully, ie win. Tell them at registration and worst case is a .99 penalty. That said Hobies' white sails are probably the best out there, 7oz dacron if memory serves me right. There are some great used sails available at catsailor and thebeachcats websites. I recently started a conversion of my magnum to a Tiger squaretop main sail which will take the penalty if I race it. Also running a Tiger chute, another penalty. If you are going to buy non-hobie get a square top.

Here is a link to what looks like an excellent source for aftermarket beachcat sails including square tops.

http://www.whirlwindsails.com/

Has anybody out there bought sails from this firm?

Whirlwind is run by the guy that used to run the Hobie sail loft.

TheBeachcats.com has their sails on the 18 magnum. Saw them at spring fever last year. Looked nice. I think Dan Berger has them on his turbo 14 as well. Good reputation.
