Does anyone else remember reading an article about sailing a Hobie 18 across the Bering Strait? I read is 25 years or so ago, in the Hotline. I have been searching for months for this article. Either I am imagining things, or my Google Fu is weak. :?:

Yep, two guys took an 18 through the NorthWest Passage. They had to do the trip in two parts as I recall.

The other big one was the two guys that sailed an 18 across the Atlantic.

There was a third, from Alaska to Russia, they got caught by the reds and ended up having pictures taken in Red Square with a custom sail.

Northern Passage was over the top of Canada. Never heard about a Russian version.

How about the Northern Passage?

Couple guys sailed an 18 across the northern passage over Canada from east to west. In 100 days, over three summers (1986-88).

I swear I saw it in a hotline in the 80's. Maybe I'm going senile at 35. I've Googled every term I can think of to find it.

Here is an interview on the CBC Game Show Front Page Challenge :

http://archives.cbc.ca/programs/264-13659/page/1/

• MacInnis and Beedell began their journey among ice floes in the summer of 1986.
• It took them a total of 100 days, over the course of three summers, to complete. They spent the winters in between in Southern Ontario.
• They achieved their goal in August 1988.
• This clip mentions that MacInnis's father had previously been a guest on Front Page Challenge. Jeffrey's father, Dr. Joseph MacInnis, is a renowned physician/scientist, ocean explorer and author. He is well known for his underwater investigations of the Titanic wreckage.

Front Page Challenge was an institution on CBC TV that ran for nearly fourty years. The show featured notable journalists attempting to guess the recent or old news story with which a hidden guest challenger was linked by asking him or her questions. After the guest was identified and/or the news story determined, the journalists then interviewed the guest about the story or about achievements or experiences for which he or she was known.

Gotta love the Maple Leaf on the 18 Yellow Sail....EH!?
