Can I reef my H 18 for my kids to use? Are there issues with the comptip? Would it be safe if I reefed it low enough to keep it out of the plastic track on the comptip?

You could rig something up as long as the sail head is in the aluminum. I have heard of guys using a Hobie 14 main for that purpose.
