Wet N Wild 2012
We arrived at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale, Ca. on Thursday evening. There were already boats on the water and people in the camping area. We set up our camp and got ready to have an enjoyable weekend. After a quick impromptu potluck dinner we sat at the fire and chatted and caught up with old friends.
Friday morning we began getting the boat rigged and changing some settings. Re-splicing lines and gluing the dagger board carpets in. We got the boat finished and put the sails up for some time on the water. We took to the lake with light winds pushing us up the lake. To switch it up a little we had Daisy driving and me crewing. We spent a couple hours running up and down the lake then came in for a short lunch break. We then went out for a few more laps and some tuning for the race in the morning. With 4 Hobie 20’s and H-18 we kept sailing from the top of the lake to the bottom. After a few laps we called it a night and went in for food and drinks at the fire side.
Saturday morning we got some breakfast and then proceeded to set up for the day. We got the registration table set up and got the shirts for all the pre-reg boats. Daisy and I worked with, Bill and Kim to get all the boats registered. All the pre registered boats got nice hoodie sweat shirts provided by Surf City Catamarans. After the registration was completed and the skippers meeting everyone got ready to sail.
There was light shifty wind and we managed to get racing. The line was port favored and the first start saw us on starboard trying to get position. Things didn’t work out to well and we were one of the last boats of the line. We managed to claw back up to mid pack in with the 18’s. At the windward mark we pulled out the chute and were off. We rounded the gate and were clearly out in front being the only boat flying the chute. The next 2 races saw much of the same with trying to call the puffs and climb the lifts and avoid the headers. With 3 races in we went in and got ready for dinner.
Dinner was served and cooked by Fleet 20 members. There was steak, chicken, hotdogs, potato salad, pasta salad, green salad, and brownies. People got there food and went to eat in a bunch of different places. With the entire camping area at Fishers Point the groups were broken up in little groups all over the beach. After the dinner people had several campfires to choose from. Stories were told and a lot of people were heard talking about “Did you see the lift that boat got?” As the night went on people began to go to sleep.
Sunday morning saw the wind on at a steady 15. After a short skippers meeting we went to the boat and got ready for some fun. We went out and saw the wind was going to lay down a little. By the time racing started the wind was about 10 with an occasional gust to about 15. One 16 lost its mast and was helped back in by Josh and Greg on the safety boat. They also had to assist others during the day. Thanks guys with good safety crew standing by it makes racing a lot more fun. With the wind up all day we got 3 more races in making 6 for the weekend.
We then started to de-rig the boat and get the camper ready to roll. We had the boat on the trailer and were almost ready to roll when the call went out for the raffle. We had a lot of prizes thanks to Chris the new fleet 20 raffle director. This was followed by the trophy presentation. As usual mike little did a wonderful job on the trophies. After the awards were all handed out we said our goodbyes and people began to go their own way.
Thanks to Fleet 20 for putting on a great weekend.
