I am upgrading an old comptip mast that had a one hole tang with the 3 hole tang from a newer all aluminum mast. I want to be sure to get the bottom hole positioned so that the stays all fit correctly. Is there some dimentional referenced for this?

All you need to do is make sure the main (bottom) hole in the 3-hole tang ends up in the same place as the original tang's hole. The measurement is not super-critical - within a 1/4" or so is OK.

I have all new rigging wires. I hope that there haven't been changes in mast setups over the years.

They have changed, not sure which year, but I know newer shrouds are shorter than what came with my '78 as such, the forestay it longer. At the same time, they changed the way the jib was cut to allow mast rake. But I don't believe they changed the mast tang location

I have new shrouds, but an old forestay, I had to put an extra chain plate on the forestay, I also attach my jib higher on the chain plate to allow some mast rake.

Not the ideal solution, but I'm a weekend warrior, not a racer.

The tang position has not changed over the years.

I did not mean to imply that the mast tang position changed, just the standing rigging.

OK, so I am ready to install my comp-tip and rivet in the new 3 Hole mast tang.

Now that I have looks more closely: The old original one hole mast tang was located rotated almost 1/4" off center to the starboard side. :o I will center the new one.

I was going to install it at the same height of my old tang, but I am now questioning the height location of the old tang since the original installer installed it off center, and could have installed it at the wrong height as well. I bought the boat used and have never rigged it so I don't have a baseline.

I really don't want to epoxy in my comp-tip, drill into it and install 12 new rivets and casings just to find out the height of the tang is off ruining my mast rake setup, UG!

Can anyone tell me the dimension of the lower tang hole (halyard hole) from the bottom of the mast casting????

I also have to relocate it slightly up or down to be sure that all the rivets have some fresh metal to bite into. If I am going to have to estimate, should I err on installing it a bit lower or higher??

Thanks!!
