I went 5 years with out dumping my 18, and in the last two weeks dumped her twice. I was alone both times too, Ive always depended on the kindness of strangers. Both times she refused to turtle. I sealed my mast good.

The first time I just couldn't get the main sheet uncleated, no biggie, I got her flipped back thanks to a standup paddle boarder who lifted my mast to about chest level with me pulling on the righting line. I only get wet up to my knees, thanks to watching creative's vids. I soon thought flipping is fun, I should do it more.

The second time was almost a disater! First I went to Mission Bay Santa Clara Point, and a quarter of the spots reserved for trailers were taken by cars, with boaters waiting for the tow trucks to snag the spots. So I went to Dana Landing, always parking there, but no beach, just a crowded pier. There was a good good stiff breeze, I was trapped off the wings all day. So on my way back to the pier I rolled up the jib, headed strait down wind towards the pier. Two hundred feet from the pier she gibed on me in a instant and capsized in half an instant.
She did not want to turtle, but was quickly drifting towards the pier.
It took me 100 feet to get the mast at the 45 deg angle and I knew I could not get her back alone. Luckily a motor boat offered help. I told him raise the mast out of the water. Now my back is to the pier and Im pulling the righting line while he lifts the mast and were about 20 feet from pier, motor boats are un-tieing and moving, cause they know Im going to crash. My hull came down 3 inches from the pier, it was a miracle. And the boat was nicely parked at the pier.
It all took 3 min.

I just wanted to share that story.

I put together one of those righting poles we talked about last weekend.Using a technique from my book laid it on it's side in a field at the edge of the water. If I hung off by a rope it came up slow but pushed on the end of the righting pole with one hand and it came right up.You have a lot of help around there and it might be easier. Not to many people around here your going to be floating around a while before someone is there to help you.Your ahead of me couldn't sail last weekend it was too cold if I went in the water i'd be in real trouble.

It's about time! In my book, if I'm not dumping my boat I'm not learning where the edge is.

Hi,
it seems that it's time to convert your 18 into a trimaran to go for saver sailing.

Take a look here:
