I am planning to replace the main halyard on my 18. Is this as straightforward as tying the new halyard to the old one and pulling it through the mast, and can it be done with the mast stepped?

I used rigging tape to attach the two halyards together. Ran it from the bottom up. Can't tie them together as they won't go thru. Pull it easy at the top so tape won't slip. Watch to be sure it doesn't kink as it goes in. Not hard to do.
