I got a quote from progressive for insurance on my 2001 H16, anywhere from $62.00+ to $104.00. It seems kind of excessive for a non powered 16' boat.

Does anybody have a good insurance company I can call to get a decent quote from?

Thanks all!

TMason

Hi tmason - interested in the costs for insurance too. I guess to know for sure I think we'd want to know what exactly you are insuring against per year. Is it the replacement cost of the boat ( what is the cost you're insuring against)?

I was thinking of checking on insuring for $1K or so for my boat (1985) and trailer etc. mainly as a result of a trailering accident or some act of god. For some reason I have a doomsday trailer incident in the back of mind since we have to trailer anywhere.

I'm curious, if we have a hurricane coming and I hitch the trailer to my vehicle (state farm) is the boat covered?

:D

I insure my boat through Progressive. The boat is insured for $25k, the trailer for another $5k I think. My policy is about $360 a year. Seems reasonable enough to me compared to my other insurance costs.

Safeco - 2 boats (2000 H17Sport and 2009 Weta) fully insured (boat/trailer replacement, 10K/person/incident medical, and $100,000K liability) @ $400.00/year. They were very expediant paying out for damage due to a beach flip from a wind gust to my cat a few years back (new mast, front cross beam, standing rigging, a rudder and some marine epoxy).

AAA charges me $70 for 8k replacement value and liability on my H16. They charge me an additional $40 to insure the trailer for $3K replacement value.

I'm with boatUS. It seems pretty reasonable. Price obviously depends on what and how much insurance you want. My rate is a little more than the progressive quotes in the original post and includes a BoatUS membership.

I guess I should clarify that was the monthly payment amount from them. Not the amount for a year.

That seems like way too much, but you did not tell us what your getting for that price.

$100k in liability from progressive on my 20 was $89 per year for me. I soon switched to State Farm with $15k in coverage on boat and trailer, I now pay around $300 per year. Where and how you store the boat seems to make a difference. I can see them charging you that if you kept it on the beach during hurricane season......

I'm in Canada, so laws could be different. I keep my boat at the campground, but since my travel trailer is parked there permanently on concrete blocked, it's insured as a second residence, as such everything I own that is at the campground is covered under my home owner's policy including the boat.

I'm with BoatUS and pay $335 per year. My policy is for "New Boat Replacement" should anything happen to it. Seemed like a good idea at the time... The policy also has $300k in liability and property damage.

I don't feel so badly now. I just renewed my insurance with Geico yesterday. The policy covers new boat replacement, property damage and liability. My boat is a 2011 Hobie 16. The policy was $143 per year. Property Damage Limits are 100k per/300k total.

As I understand it, my car insurance covers the boat only for liability when being towed. The Auto policy will not cover any damage to the boat due to an incident. Only a boat policy will cover damage to the boat when the boat is being towed (unless of course the damage is the fault of a third party, in which case the third party's auto policy is responsible for all property damage).

Just wanted to bump this thread because 10 years is apparently a long time in the insurance world.

I just got insurance for my boat. BoatUSA and Geico no longer insure “multi-hull sailboats”….Didn’t see that coming.

Anyways, I got insurance thru progressive (only one I could do the process 100% online).
$253 /year

Includes:
100K / 300K Liability
$8,000 “agreed price” replacement value (+ Trailer)
$250 deductible (col and comp both)
“Racing / Speed Contest” purpose (didn’t actually change the cost vs “pleasure/personal use”)
24/7 towing service
