Hello,
I just bought a 2004 Hobie 16 and had a question about the forestay. After stepping the mast and putting the boat on our sailing club's beach, we realized that the connection between the forestay and the bridle was different than all the other H16s on the beach. On ours, the forestay is connected to the shackle that connects the two cables in the bridle with a relatively long (1-1.5 in.) shackle. The mast angle and the forestay look okay, but after seeing that all the other hobies had a chain plate connecting the forestay to the bridle, we weren't sure. Also, we noticed that the jib sheets had two blocks connected to a chain plate. If anyone could provide some insight on the setup of the forestay and the chain plate for this 2004 H16 it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The forestay on 2004 boats was extraordinarily long. Someone may have eliminated the forestay adjuster because of that (otherwise, when you lower the jib, the mast will lean aft at a very severe angle).

The forestay adjuster is the stock set up. You may want to shorten your forestay.

I'm having a hard time visualizing your description of the jib sheet attachment. The stock system is two loose blocks attached with a small shackle to one of the five holes in the clew plate.

Figure 19 of the assembly manual shows how to attach the bridles and forestay to the 10-hole adjuster. The bow shackle in the third hole from the bottom is what holds the tack of the jib in place.

Also in the 'Hobie 16 FAQ' section is a nice video on rigging the 16, good luck!

Thanks for the info. MBounds: I looked at a nearly new 2011 hobie 16 on our beach and the mast angle is similar to ours. Ours being like you said angled very far back. Is that just how they make them now? I saw somewhere else that the mast will come forward as you raise the jib.
