Possible. There is a lot of load on the sheet and is under constant adjustment, so a different one (from the furler type) would have to be used.

Matt,

I hope someone at Hobie is looking into this problem I went sailing today with a guy who bought an AI in 2006 sailed it so much that Hobie replaced the hull when it started to split after 2 years and his main sheet looked less worn than mine.

I would think that the tech support people at Harken would be willing to look at the problem for Hobie. After all you're using a lot of their hardware.

Certainly something we have an eye on.

Matt,

What do you suggest we do with our worn out main sheets? Will Hobie replace them under waranty? If not, why not? It is way beyond normal wear and tear.

Until we fully understand the issue and decide what needs to be changed, I'll reserve a decision on that one. Fuzz on the sheet does not prohibit the function at this point. Actually, many types of dacron sheets are designed to "fuzz up" for better grip. If the outer sleeve fails... then we are talking replacement for sure. You can reverse the sheet to get a bit more life out of it too.

Matt,

I reversed the sheet before my last trip out but it didn't help. It may be because when I first started sailing my TI I had it rigged for a 3:1 mechanical advantage so when I reversed it at 2:1 I'm still in a worn spot.

I agree that it shouldn't be changed until the outer sleeve fails. I really don't want to change it until Hobie figures out what's causing the wear. The problem is that I know it's going to happen and I don't want to wait 2 or 3 weeks for a new sheet when it does.

Has anyone worn the outer sleeve out completely yet? If you have please post it. If anyone regularly sails from the rear seat and doesn't have a worn sheat please post that also.

Fyi... our discussions are on the quality of the supplied line and the routing of the line through the block and to the cleat. Our test boat using the same supplied material (earlier batch) does not show this issue, so may be a supplier issue primarily... but we will look to move the cheek block and anything else that makes sense to alleviate the problem.

Matt,

My dealer, Black Creek Outfitters, Jacksonville, Florida, gave me a new sheet for my TI today. They just received it from Hobie and it's black with multi-colored tracers in it. Is it worth installing it and seeing if it frays like the one that came with the boat or should I wait for total failure of the original sheet before I start using the new one?

My AI main sheet is fraying in a couple of places and has worn through the mantle in one spot exposing the kern. The area coincides with the rear pulley when stowed and the front main sheet cleat when close hauled.

I purchased the AI in April 2009, this damage became apparant about 6 months ago, but does not seem to be getting any worse. Should it be replaced?

Once the core starts popping out it can be a problem. This can jam in a block or hook on something. This is different from the TI sheet issues. This one appears to have been nicked or something on this specific spot. There is no wear apparent around the area.

So should I be checking my block and cleat for burrs? will it be replaced under warranty?

There are any number of items... not specifically stock hardware provided with the boat that could have damaged the line since you started sailing, but yes... inspect to prevent furture issues. I honestly don't think this one is a warranty issue. When in doubt... see your dealer though.

Has this been resolved yet?
My 2012 TI is 3 months old (I bought it 2nd hand 2 days ago) and seller claimed to have used it only a few times. There is about a 2-meter long section of wear which is located around the rear pulleys/stainless wear plate like in the photo previously posted.
Does this require a remedy or is it simply regarded now as part of the running in that will settle? See pics below.
Thanks.
