We're headed to Lake Norman (NC) tomorrow but will have to meet up there soon. Good sailing.

How were things up at Jordan? Nice winds on Norman today, even flipped it. There was another H16 and another cat, not sure what type, out with us for a while too.

Man what a great day. The wind was really blowing. One of the best days I've had on Jordan. My daughter trapped out all day and we had a blast.

Jon - I'm right there with you. I completely embarrassed myself by dumping the boat 200 yards off the beach as soon as I got started. I guess I just under estimated the wind and got clobbered by the first big gust. Got a good laugh and managed to keep the big pole pointed skyward the rest of the day.

John W. - did you make it out? I talked to Drummer63 as I was rigging. He had some rudder problems and had to call it early. I ran into a couple of other Hobies and a Prendle 16 too.

I sure hate that I missed the best part of the day - Need to replace the plunger on that Port side and all should be good

Sorry I missed you,

I figured the weather wasn't going to be worth my trailer-ing in from Downtown... so I stayed home. I'm going out there today so can (at least) drop the boat off back out at the Lake storage area. Looks like doldrums today....

I think the guy with the Prindle is "Jeremy". Nice guy. I met him last weekend.

John

Hope to see you next weekend!

Cheers

I noticed this post about 11 on Saturday and immediately went to NOAA wind forecasts and then held my head in my hands because I was stuck with work. It looked so good. And Sunday was predicted to be another light and variable. Maybe next time...

Hey John, I'm sailing in Wilmington this weekend so I can't make it to Jordan. Hope you have good weather. Catch you next time.

JJ,

Thanks for the links.

I'm a Flight Instructor (my fun job) so I'm familiar with the NOAA sites / Aviation weather.

That windmapper site is new to me though. Looks like they collect all the METAR wind data and display in a easy to view map...pretty cool.

John

Hey, jward, I watch these pretty closely a day or two in advance...

Someday I want to learn a little more about isobar maps and gradient air at 2,000 feet and how they predict wind forecasts. There's an interesting article here:

http://www.winningwind.com/predictingwind.html

This paragraph toward end:
Quote:
To work out the actual wind on the surface, we start by working out what the gradient wind is then modify our answer based on a set of pretty simple rules to get the wind direction and strength that we are likely to experience on deck. Due to the deflection of the Coriolis force, we start with the assumption that the wind at 2000 feet blows parallel along the isobars. Remembering of course, that the wind flows clockwise around a high pressure in the northern hemisphere and anticlockwise around a 'low'.

Yeah, anyone can go camping and plan for a variety of possible weather situations. But not so sailing, of course. No wind, no sail.

BTW, last Saturday turned out to be good. Wish I could have gone, but was helping a daughter move.
