Hi,

I recently noticed a lot of "slop" in the holes for the sacrificial bolt for the ama braces. After nine months, the bolts are both near failure.

My fix is very easy: fill the offending holes with epoxy, let it cure, and drill out to proper size. Slop removed. In a further nine months I'll know if it made a difference but...

Another way would be to drill out the hole and then epoxy a correct size stainless steel bushing in there that could withstand the wear and tear better then aluminum can.

That would work but might be overkill. My holes didn't show any signs of being enlarged though wear, they were just drilled to too large a size. Almost 3/32" to big. In fact the "paint" used was in perfect condition.

Local availability of nylon bolts of other diameters is questionable and that would defeat the point of the bolt entirely, as it is designed to fail in a collision but hold up to everyday use. A heavier bolt won't fail as easily, possibly breaking something else. Also, I would have to drill bigger holes in the aka supports which weakens them.

A little epoxy and the wobble is gone...

Excellent link, definitely worthy of consideration. Crashes are very unlikely a so why risk a flip?

I did this as well as epoxy install thin wall ss sleeves all the way through all the cross bars ends and aka ends with ss tubing that exactly fit the pins and did away with the plastic bolts for ss as I think the plastic end piece on the brace would be the first to give in event of collision. Now I have almost no slop in all directions and all connections are now stronger. :D
