Absolutely Tom! I recall racing against a sister ship, and we had a 40 mile trip to the next turning point. I sailed directly at the mark, while my opponent "cracked the sheets" and sailed just slightly off the wind and a little faster, and then tacked back at the end. After 40 miles, we were within two boat-lengths of each other (and he had a much more comfortable ride!)

Just out of interest, here is a very short video of the tidal flow between lake and ocean. This is not yet at full speed of 9 knots!
