PA 12 vs 14 ocean handling

I am looking to purchase the 2013 PA14 or the 12. I would like some comments on how the two handle on the ocean when leaving and returning surf conditions? I do not plan on surfing the kayak for fun mainly ocean fishing.
I have watched one youtube video (all I could find) somewhat helpful.

I have Both PA12 and PA 14. Both Yaks Handle exceptionally well. I think the either PA’s are a great choice for Ocean fishing. The Margin of Safety is the major advantage over other Yaks. The PA 14 is more stable when standing; however the PA12 is just as stable when seated.

I think one of the biggest considerations has to do with weight. Handling the Yak when out of the water. The PA14 (138) weighs about 40 more lbs than the PA12 (98). I think this becomes a major issue in choosing between a PA 12 and 14.

Both are great Yaks (Boats) I use both for Mothershipping.

I live on the northwest Oregon coast and the seas can be exciting. I worked on the ocean as a commercial fisherman Shrimp/dragger 90' boat 4years. I respect for the ocean. The weight is not a problem for me. Im 6'1" 230 and have worked construction for many years now. Im use to heavy lifting and using the legs to lift. I really am leaning towards the PA 14 2013. I would love to hit the salmon and sturgeon seasons now, and then the ocean when weather is better.

This kayaking is new to me, but looks exciting. What does mothership mean? Is that a fishing vessel? thanks again

I think you are making a great choice. The PA 14 is a great boat. “Mothership” refers to hauling your kayak to the fishing spot in a larger boat. I have a 30 Rampage with Diesels. I have built a rack which supports hauling two PA’s. I live/fish near the mouth of Long Island Sound. Many Very Large Striped Bass have been caught in our area, including the current IGFA Worlds record holder. It take a lot of pressure off if you make a 10 to 25 mike transit under power. Launch and recovery of PA14’s is a breeze.

I would go with the 14, you get more for your money since both are around the same price (will never understand that one) .


Both are overly heavy and that and the price is their main drawbacks . I f Hobie was ever able to build a lighter one and a more affordable one it would be unbeatable and they wouldn't even need to offer other yaks.
